Mountain Biking - Is it a good MTB? from a newbie..

This is an assembled bike and not a famous brand from the online shop.
So, I can't find any same bike or same spec of this bike.

I want to commute to work and go weekend mountain bike riding.
I really don't know about MTB.

Can someone have a look at this bike's specs and tell me it is a good combination of parts or not please.

This bike price is A$359 (app.U$285).
Is it a good price too??

hahah....Well crafted light weight off road bike for casual riders, good gears, expensive frames, strong downhill fork and double wall wheels.

But yeah, that bike looks okay. Okay components, but i'm not too sure about the fork. Price doesn't seem to be too off either.

well if comes with a bell, acording to picture number four down there at the bottom. The fact that that bike has a deore RD at that price point means most likely that other things are significantly downgraded. Now personally I would rather have something a bit more evenly balanced.

I don't think I would buy that, well not from that company, anyways. Those decriptions are mind numbingly terrible.

For the money the bike looks good and its probably a good entry level MTB, the components are brands I know at an acceptable level. The down side is you wont know if you like the bike or if it fits you until you've paid for it! Moreover, whos going to assemble and test it to make sure its just right before you ride it? YOU ARE! Who's going to give it its first service in a couple of weeks when all your cables have stretched and its developed the mystery squeak/rattle that you cant find let alone make go away? YOU ARE! Honestly for sake of saving maybe 50$ initially on purchase you are going to give some bike shop the job of making run right for a lot more than that, perhaps 100's more depending on whether you get it right or not the first time. And as well as all that, what if its defective? who's going to pay to ship it back for every warranty claim you ever need to make? YOU ARE! Bike shops do more than sell bikes they provide a service to their customers that you are going to miss out on for sake of 50$ that you are certain to spend later.

Like some others have said, a 15" frame is quite small. Don't even think about dropping coin on a bike until you know what size you need.

I'd steer clear of this one anyway. Woeful descriptions on the website. They're marketing Deore shifting, but in reality it just has a Deore rear derailleur with very entry level shifters. Needing to talk it up that much isn't a particularly good thing!

For under AU$400, it might be a decent deal. If I were you I'd save up another couple of hundred to get something like a Specialized Hardrock (great entry level bike). I've kinda lost touch with Aussie bike prices, but I'm guessing you should be able to pick one up for around $600.

Since you're in cairns im not sure if you have the same sort of bike market as Melbourne VIC does, but here is something I've noticed around here.
A lot of slightly older (some 04 & some 05) GT Avalanches are being sold at VERY good prices. For AU$399 I've seen 04 and 05 Avalanche models with good components, decent shocks and some with disk brakes. Thats a pretty solid bike and it will last you much much longer than the one you mentioned. Just throw some slicks on it for commuting and youre set.
