View Full Version : 7TH TDF Victory, How important
So if LA wins this year, how big would this victory be compared to his 6th? Would winning one more really be a great accomplishment?
It would be big....but won't be bigger than last year...
I think it would mean more to cycling (especially in the US) that to Lance. He really has more to loose than to win. Just my .02 worth.
No TdF victory is insignificant be it #1 or #7. Having said that.....
I was one of the ones really hoping to see LA tackle a Giro or Vuelta before he retired. Or a serious run at the Classics. The 6th TdF was the history maker and for me, at least, a 1st Giro/Vuelta/Paris-Roubaix/etc victory would cement his legacy more firmly than a 7th TdF.
IMO

In terms of cycling history, the debate is whether Lance Armstrong deserves the title of 'Greatest Ever', because his overall 'palmares' is on the light side compared with Eddy Merckx, or Bernard Hinault, or even Indurain. Winning 7 in a row would be a crowning acheivement, something I think no one could ever do again.

that is soo true, many people hate him because he wins, and he should back off because hes taking over blah blah blah. Well guess what? I dont see any of those people bi***ing winning the tour?
For some people, winning a stage is huge, even BEING in the tour is huge!

It will be more significant several years from now, when the next guy has 5 tours won. Might be significant in that if he wins he goes out with a win, or perhaps not significant in that.
Otherwise not that important. It will pull him into a tie for 4th on total major tours won.
It pales in comparison to number 6, which was beginning to seem cursed, e.g. riders who 'should' have won number 6 ran into bad luck and good opposition.
Number 7 may make a difference as to where he ranks compared to Mig. But his one Worlds makes a much bigger difference on that issue.
