Foo - Aliens

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Aliens (not illegal immigrants) suddenly cropped up about the same time we "Earthlings" became aware of the possibility they might exist. Which of the following does this suggest to you?

Interesting, isn't it, that the media has consistently for the last 25 or more years given us a largely unvarying image of the 'grey men'? Now we see that image on t-shirts, bumperstickers, coffee mugs, and in film and television.
A friend once postulated that perhaps the most effective way to prepare the populace for the inevitable discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence is to first inundate popular culture with icons meant to represent these beings in a fictional (and therefore safe) context.

We've always had elves, fairies, demons, angels, spirits....maybe we have discovered their true nature now. Or, more likely, we are just slapping a new, modern, and culturally-acceptable label on something that has been with us all along (whether they are materially real, part of our human psyche, or some non-corporeal, not-yet-understood part of the world.)
Many of the old fairy stories--the REAL ones, before they were prettied up for children and the upper class--are similar to today's UFO stories....mysterious abductions, dangerous and inexplicable beings, lost time, snatched babies, dire warnings not to tell anyone what you've seen...

Wouldn't it be an enormous waste of space if we are all there is in the vast universe? There has to be other life elsewhere. :p
Some ask why would they come here. Probably for the same reasons we go across the planet to look at ants or beneath the oceans to look at tube worms. I think (hope) you get my point.

How would we know if someone was an alien. Maybe we could look for seemingly normal people who do odd or inexplicable things.
What about sitting inside a metal cage for hours moving an inch at a time? OH NO! Peak hour motorists are all aliens.

I certainly won't rule out the possibility of other life in the universe, or even in this Solar System. The thing is, when most people think of 'aliens' they think of green men in flying saucers, and they also assume that we'd be able to detect their communications if they were anywhere near us.
On the first point, life can be something as small as a virus, and it may be that they don't even use flying saucers at all. On the communications bit, heck we can't even detect it when ants communicate with each other, what makes people think we'd be able to hear extra-terrestrial beings.

I just noticed Hillyman's sig. Unfortunately I can't make it to Indiana that weekend. :(
I might have to make up for it with local hills.

It does look very interesting.
I'm the only one who knows the truth about my mother in law?
Hillman, I'll keep it in my mind but it's awfully flat here and that's a long way to go to get my butt kicked.

yes there are aliens.... and they ride the tour. there is no humanly way possible to ride those grueling climbs. why do you think we poke and prod lance and the others? it is for years of them probing us. they just don't talk about the anal probes at the tour....
I'm aware of at least TWO aliens on this thread, and they both have over 3000 posts. Luckily they are on different continents so their power to subvert is limited.

I am glad I'm an alien, aren't you? Actually, there is only ONE of us, but we are able to exist simultaneously as two individual entities on separate hemispheres.
...and they both have over 3000 posts.
Subsisting on only 2 hours of sleep has many practical uses.
Luckily they are on different continents so their power to subvert is limited.
Don't count on it, buster.
Holy Moly, they're threatening me from two fronts!

But YOU could win the most miles traveled award!!!!!:D :D
Hmmm... I think it'd be interesting to compare sightings of UFO's over a period of time. I've heard of old sailors reporting flying ships that looked, surprisingly, like ships. Then we had the classic 50's saucer. Now in the 00's lights & energy are cool.
I have an alien inside me. It cant take its alcohol as well as I can  <RIP Babylon5>

if there is not, well we're F*&%'ed.

It was those damned bucket seats and the oh-so-PC absense of a dashboard lighter and ashtray in those later models.

Sometimes people get scared at the idea that there may be aliens and other smarter beings out there. But in reality that's awesome because we would have a larger family that we originally thought. The idea that were alone and its all up to us, is far more scary than us not being alone. I always say that were part alien because theirs so many different humans races on the planet. People can say we came from monkeys.. but then why are the monkeys still here.. wouldn't they be gone and evolved into humans already? I think we were seeded here
If you've ever seen or talked with my Mother-In-Law....

Someone doesn't understand the nature of evolution.
Ok, what's the big idea of resurrecting a thread from 2002? Pete (LBM) hasn't been on here in over a year. :( Come back Pete.

I used to own an elevated chainstay Nishiki Alien Mountain bike, does that count?,
It is a bit more Germain to a Bike list.

We...I mean they...mean you...errr us... no harm. Disregard the book in their hands that's entitled "How to Serve Man". It's not true that you make good casseroles.
Peace. Ride your bikes in circles. Don't look up to the sky.

Yeah, but they won't fit metric or standard. You ever try to find a three mulmit, zarquod head bolt, on short notice?

but then why are the monkeys still here.. wouldn't they be gone and evolved into humans already? I think we were seeded hereThis is a ridiculously common error in the understanding of natural selection - scientists simply say that man and chimps share a common ancestor. One doesn't "turn into" the other over time.
Read here for a better understanding: http://www.noanswersingenesis.org.au/
People believe strange things for a variety of reasons, aliens being one of only MANY of these. There's really no empirical evidence (actual empirical, shared evidence.....not some whack-job's personal sightings--otherwise there's also a lot of "evidence" for the ghost of Elvis, Nessy, etc.) so I don't believe in aliens. The idea is interesting, but just because it makes the world seem more interesting (and it makes old X-files reruns more fun) isn't a good reason for the belief to me.
BTW - Epic thread revival.
Yes with this caveat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlikCebQSlY).

This is the problem I have with aliens. People usually assume they are benevolent beings.
But I think if aliens exist, they'll kick our asses, cart off the women, and steal the bicycles.

I have no issue with the concept of aliens, I wonder if permaybehaps they have been involved in/at key points of our development, as a species, When I start thinking about the whole concept of what life was like a few thousand years ago.
Fire and the the uses of it. Metallurgy, writing, language-- most of that makes sense to a point.
Then you get into things like Stonehenge, the Pyramids (both Egyptian and Mexican) Nazca lines, the Antikythera mechanism, aluminum belt buckles in 4000 yr old graves.
It all kind of make you wonder.
In Ohio we have a congressman(Dennis Kucinich)that speaks to UFO's and aliens on a regular basis while on our payroll.
Sure with they would take him to Uranis.

I've always told anyone that would listen that humans don't belong on earth, we just don't fit into the system, we are the only critter on earth that destroys its own habitat for a profit. We destroy everything and blame evreything but ourselves for it. So if you ask me someone (or something) dropped of that "troublsome little critter" thats been causing so many problems on their world and placed it on earth, and that makes all of us Aliens.

The cyanobacteria didn't do the anaerobic critters any favors.

I have no problem with aliens. Provided they follow the rules and apply for citizenship. I really would rather they not vote until they are sworn in, though.
Oh, and I don't want them given social security benefits until after they've paid into the system.
And they do make some fairly decent Kryptonite bike locks, too!

Yeah, but the cyanobacteria don't do it for a profit. ;0)
My co-workers are solid proof that there are aliens and amongst us too! Take Steve with his wispy hair, the stuff moves on it's own as you talk to him. Or regarde Talitha who can turn her head completely to the rear so she faces backwards, or lil' Renee, who is about five foot even yet can eat twice as much as me and not gain weight. Lastly, there's Kirk, who can drink the cold, day old coffee with no ill effects.
