Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - I found the perfect lube for a suzue jr

After messengering on my rain bike (an early 70's letour with the most random assortment of durable but heavy crap parts you've ever seen) for most of the bay area's wet winter, I brought it out again today to do a little work on it. The first mile or so was painful and loud, and then suddenly it was smoother than ever. I got to the shop, took apart the jr's for the first time in 3 years (is it really worthwile to overhaul a jr?) and found that they were completely dry and covered in super fine rust. As long as i kept them spinning, the rust keeps everything silky smooth. I've got about 20 more miles on my route today, I'm going to go see how it holds up!

Umm ... I think you're gonna grind your bearings into dust.

I'd recommend using my special secret, lube up with pumice and aluminum oxide dust instead of grease. As it grinds the bearings and races into a fine powder, you have to keep tightening the cone, but eventually you'll get to the point where there is nothing but powder, which is like having millions of tiny ball bearings. So smooth, your friends will be jealous! Only losers go with the 10 big 5/16" steel ball bearings, kool kids go with the millions of 1 micron bearings.

at 1 micron, the bearings start wicking moisture, just like polypropylene underwear, transmitting dangerous moisture to the outside of your hub where it belongs.

Shouldn't you have a fixed gear brain with no gears?

He already is, its just chain noise. Maybe a little too much tension.

Yeah, its 5:30pm, I've still got a bunch to do before I can leave work, and I've got waaay to much coffee in me. Definately too much chain tension. I'll have to apply my favorite brain lube, PBR.

Good call. PBR is a good day-to-day lube, but sometimes you really need to clean things out and get the job done. Especially since I just found out that the rims I paid for a week and a half ago just shipped TODAY... Grr...
