Hello, ,

I just bought a bike a couple of weeks ago: A Giant Sedona DX. Now that I am entranced with the Tour de France and Lance Armstrong's story, I wish I had gotten a Trek just for the cache!

Did I do OK on the bike I chose? So far I have ridden 55 miles and my average speed is 9.9 mph. The local bike club "pace lines" (whatever those are) seem to all require 20 mph. I am 50 years old and wonder if there is any hope of ever getting that fast.

I like my bike a lot -- did upgrade the seat and added clipless pedals. Last night I had my first crash and skinned an elbow, but I really do like the pedals / shoes very much.

I am looking for an inexpensive place to obtain a jersey. I got the biking shorts and the special shoes; helmet; computer; lights -- am running out of money!! I don't want to pay 75 dollars for a skin tight colorful screaming jersey. But I want one that will keep me cooler than my cotton t-shirts. Any suggestions? Kansas is hot and humid!

Nice to meet you,

Karuna

Glad your here and really glad your riding. From one fifth decade rider to another, the longer you ride the longer you can ride.

We might never ride with the teenage pacelines but there are plenty of other places and times to ride. I like the one day tours and rallies, and Kansas has a lot of them. You start with the shorter rides, but by this time next year you can ride a century (100 miles in one day) if you really want to.

Join your local club. That is the place to see what clothes people wear and what people ride. Most clubs have slower biginner and group rides that can teach you most anything you want to learn.

Welcome!

Hey Karuna, Welcome to BF and cycling. I wouldn't worry about average speed right now,it will improve with time. Most bike shops have a plain jersey you can pick up at a good price. But if you want to do the online thing www.nashbar.com and www.performancebike.com have about the best deals you can find.
