I don't think Angel's Trumpet is a gateway drug either.

Leads you on to harder drugs. First marijuana, then heroin, then LSD, according to Joe Friday on Dragnet.
oh... isn't any drug you start out with a gateway drug?

why is nicotine not considered a gateway drug?
it is when its used by those underage types....but when used by those of age, it is not...because it can be purchased over the counter legally...
the term "gateway drug" is a term used by some to cast the blame of their addiction on anyone other than themself...ie if i would have never tried marijuana, i would of never gotten hooked on crack, therefore...smoking marijuana must lead to smoking crack....right?
there's another way to look at it....
could just be that marijuana use invovles people buying illegal drugs, making it more likely that they will meet with an offer of harder drugs, some accept the offers of the harder stuff...while others simply do not....
the same can be said of those that buy cigarettes & alcohol underage

Drug use is not the problem, it's merely a symptom of something deeper. No-one's interested in dealing with the actual problem - it's too intractable and certainly can't be solved in less than one generation - so they come down hard on the symptom. and claim to be fixing things. Idiots.
As for the term 'gateway drug', I always thought it was a term coined because they couldn't think of anything else negative about the drug (in the case of marijuana [1]). Cigarettes (which contain far more nasty crap than just nicotene) have enough proven negative effects that a valid case can be made against them without resorting to the spurious 'gateway drug' garbage.
[1] which is not to say that marijuana isn't harmful; inhaling smoke of any kind will have a negative effect on your lungs.

The only thing gateway about pot is the dealers.
I have used pot in the past, and very well knew who to get it from, and pretty much every last dealer was selling ecstacy, LSD, mushrooms, mescaline, and a good part of them sold various forms of meth/speed.
It's not hte drug to blame, it's the fact that dealers tend to sell a wide variety of drugs, so they don't go broke when they either can't get anything to sell or can't sell it.
Then you have to foctor in that some shady dealers "dust" their pre-rolled joints with stuff like meth, in attempts to addict people to that dust of choice.
If pot was legalized, it wouldn't be a gateway drug anymore, and that's just because you wouldn't have to deal with shady people if you wanted it.

Wow, I forgot all about Mescaline. I remember(amazingly) strawberry and chocolate mescaline.
Ahh, those were the days ;)
I agree that its the dealers, not the pot that is the gateway.

It's not a gateway drug, because it's more deadly and addictive than so many other drugs.

It's a silly drug. Most drugs have the common decency to make you see colors, fall on the ground and/or laugh a lot at the dog. Nicotine just makes you a misanthropic grump who needs a fix every 20 minutes.

I used to be able to smoke maryjane and hash 'til the cows came home in high school (probably still could if tried), but give me a few tokes of nicotine and I'm literally ready to barf my guts out.

Not a "gateway drug"(asinine term, IMO), but a poison like most of our wonderful drugs.
nic·o·tine n.
A colorless, poisonous alkaloid derived from the tobacco plant and used as an insecticide.
-The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary
That it's also used as an insecticide is just icing on the cake.
Two words...tobacco lobby.
