Hi, I have an american Raleigh bike, it says suntour and capri on it, the serial number is 6C02743 (there's also an M under the serial..). I just want to make sure it's not old enough to be worth something before I sell it... Thanks for any help.
Most american raleighs don't have a lot of collector value...

I fixed up a mid 80's capri for my sister about a year ago... Taiwanese, hi-tensile steel, plastic (!!) stem shifters... I was going to turn it into a fixie for myself (it actually had nice shimano SLR aero brake levers... strange!), but her bike was stolen around the time of the acquisition. It was a 60 cm frame, the guy that sold it to me was about 5'-2" tall and couldn't find anyone to buy it (I had seen the "for sale, $25" sign on his porch for 2 weeks, but nobody was ever home). We settled on $12.
Anywho, the new capri's are marketed as women's bikes, but the old ones are just solid commuters/beaters. I wouldn't expect to finance an education on the sale, that's for sure.

6 in the first position appears to denote 1986. There have been a couple of Raleighs posted with seiral numbers in similar arrangements and they appear to all conform to this dating format. I know my wife's Raleigh Record with a serial of 4DJ14... came out to be an '84. Another guy's 3#### was an 1983, etc.
Suntour components will all have date codes. Check on the vintage Trek site for details.

I'll add to that. My 87 Raleigh Record has serial number 7BH0725.
