Mountain Biking - Sunglasses vs. googles.

This is mainly for the full face fella's but anyone can respond.

I take my helmet off a lot because it's soo hot here in Texas and we take breaks, but I have to always pull my sunglasses off and then take my helmet off. I was thinking about getting some googles but I have NO idea whats good and whats not. My questions to you are, Do you wear googles or stick with glasses? What brands are good but not in the hundreds of dollars?

Personal fit. Most don't feel right and others just don't offer peripheral vision to feel comfortable. I preferred oakleys (unfortunately...$$$)...

I even prefer the good old M-frame (Oakley) when I ski, so that's a no-brainer to me. Naturally, I have both but I only use the goggles when it snows badly or is super-cold. EDIT: ...or in powder, as illustrated in the old avatar I'm using (I'd hate to loose them M-frames in the snow...); it was a nice day, so I went with a regular helmet rather than my full helmet.

The reason I prefer M-frames is that they aren't as hot and over time don't get as sweaty.

Arnette's they are nice. I just use sunnies, it adds to the pimp factor and it's sort of a rep I have to keep up at the races..... I'm the guy who wears sunnies:)

Ryders are great for the $$.

Broke my sunglassses. Got a pair of scotts for a buck at a yard sale (goggles, nice). Strap couldn't fit, so i made an inner-tube strap. I like sunglasses generally as you can use them when youre just taking a stroll, without looking ********.

I stick with my sunglasses and helmet and I use these:

When just out cruising the trails I just wear sun glasses or clear depending on weather and time of day. When racing I will use goggles because I do not want to have to deal with the glasses slipping, falling off, etc.

As for what goggles, take your helmet with you when you buy them so you can try the goggles on with the helmet. Some helmets have a narrow opening that will not let larger frame goggles fit properly. My person choice are the ProGrip 3400's (http://www.progrip.com/default.asp?ite=gog) w/a light sensitive lens. They fit well in all of my ff helemts, are comfortable and keep the sweat out of my eyes and have great ventalation. Also the light sensitive lense actualy works quick enough so I am not riding blind when going from bright to shadowed condition on the trail. They are also light enough to use on rainy days.

True. Racing would put another dimension to it. I'd certainly go goggles then.

I use a pair of clear saftey glasses that look just like these (except for the clear lens). My brother-in-law picked up a 12 pack of them for $12 at Sam's Club. They are Scrath and Glare resistant and provide 100% UV protection.

The best part is they cost only a $1 and in a year when I need a new pair we have 10 more of them. Best value in riding glasses I have found.

hate safety goggles. i use them in shop class and they always make me dizzy....or maybe it's just cause the school likes to purchase cheap stuff

:eek: WHAT? 12?!? These are polarized Maui Jim Sport's Sunsets, they retailed for over $100! :eek: I'm just glad daddy found a set for me (I do feel sorry for whomever lost them though) :rolleyes:

I presume you meant to say "goggle's" instead of google's... HUGE difference.....
Anyways,

I wear a pair of Bolle' goggles in the sub 32° temps....
I wear a pair of AOS safety glasses (yellow lenses) otherwise....

M Frame Oakleys are the way to go. You've really, really got to be pushing it to have them come off. I've worn them flying doors open in a blackhawk many times before without them coming off, safe to say they've never come off while riding.

i once whatched something on oln(dont know if anyone else cought it) it was about base jumping, the guy was wearing oakley x-metals. if they dont fall off base jumping i dont think you going to have any trouble mtb-ing

I prefer sunglasses to anything, had an old pair of Scott's and didn't like riding with em, I found Pepper's at a Gander Mountain store and thought i'd try em, they work well for me.

Goggles are something I wear when either it's pretty cold (near freezing) or I'm doing lift-serviced riding and not generating a lot of heat.

Goggles probably steam less easily than sunglasses, but once they are fogged they MUCH harder to clear. They also make my face feel hot, which is something I hate.

Hence most summer rides with the fullface it's just sunglasses, but I wear goggles most of the winter for both snowboarding and riding.

Getting goggles to fit well with some fullfaces is a challenge though, so take your helmet with you when you try them out. The best fit I have found with a couple different FF helmets is the scott hi-voltage goggles, which may be no longer made.

OMG i love those goggles, one set with wicked cool plaid straps and the other set with Italian Flag stripes all the way around. Those are sweet

If you need both glasses and goggles, theres only one choice. Wiley SG-1, they work as goggles and snap they will be sunglasses.. Good enough for our Army boys good enough for riding.. They can be had on ebay for around 60.00

Damn it, my infamous racing glasses broke today :( Doing a gap, cased the rear while still a bit tweaked, I rode out but effectively falt landed a high speed stepdown wit habout a 2.5m drop. I got huge head snap and my sunnies flew under my bike:( Time to get another pair of $12 sunnies:p

I wear Oakley as well. I crashed and slid for 25 feet and my Oakleys didn't come off.

I like to put on my Cebe goggles when I'm about to begin a downhill (especially dusty ones) or through the forests (hazards to eyes). It helps see better in bad weather conditions and is nice to wear, although it doesn't ventilate too well.

Is there any difference between snowboard goggles and MTB goggles?

wiley x are good. they are used alot in combat situations. i still am a diehard oakley fan. i would get the half jackets for mtb. my unknowns are doing a good job for $60 less :)
