what's the single best bike fitness book
for a 50 yr. old guy who's been biking
to/from work for 3 months and wants
to take it to the next level? I don't
care right now about speed or distance
- just fitness.
many thanks,

Sounds like a book about how to do more than a half century! Actually, sounds like a good book and I'm going to look it up as well.

I haven't read many bike fitness books, but I was impressed by Joe Friel's "Cycling Past 50".

which bike fitness books would you recommend
for someone in their 50's who's biked to/from
work for 3 months and wants to take it to the
next level?
I don't care about going fast or far, I'm just
interested in getting fit and feeling good.
many thanks,
If you care about getting fit and feeling good, try "The Maffetone Method" by Dr. Phil Maffetone. His focus is on total body health, which is different than just being fit.

I just got a copy of Bike for Life a week ago, and have only skimmed through it. I'm really looking forward to spending some quality time reading it. One chapter that really looks good is on keeping healthy knees, including a lot of in-depth advice on therapy and exercises to treat or prevent chondromalacia pataella.
Riding Past Fifty is a great book, but seems more oriented towards maintaining serious levels of fitness and performance. Bike for Life seems to address more subjects overall, and take a more moderate approach.
