Installment Four. Looks good, opens today. With Dennis Hopper playing the Devil. Anyone seen it yet?

"In "George A. Romero's Land of the Dead," an excellent freakout of a movie, the living no longer have the advantage or our full sympathies. The fourth installment in Mr. Romero's vaunted zombie cycle (which began with his 1968 masterpiece, "Night of the Living Dead"), the new film is also the latest chapter in what increasingly seems like an extended riff on Dante's "Inferno."

In the earlier "Dead" films, Mr. Romero guided us through circles of hell that, despite the flesh-eating ghouls, looked a lot like the exurban world outside our windows. With this new movie, we jump straight to the ninth circle, where Satan is a guy in a suit and tie who feasts on the misery of others, much as the dead feast on the living."

That totally kills it for me. Dennis Hopper is such a clown.

He is a clown, but he plays a good psycho too. Ever see Blue Velvet?

It's supposed to be 97 degrees tomorrow -- the beaches will be mobbed and I don't have AC at home. Looks like I'll be at the theatre watching this flick.

Is Romero the last of the oldtime shock/low budget/horror directors still doing that stuff? Look at Raimi, from Evil Dead to Spider Man. Cameron, from Terminator to Titanic. Miller, MadMax to Babe. The evolution of directors from their beginning to the present is pretty amazing. Tarantino does not even want his name on his first flick, My Best Freinds birthday

I love zombie flicks, even acknowledging that the zombie genre isn't known for winning Academy Awards, and I enjoyed "Land of the Dead." It was funny in that great dark way. I don't think you're ever supposed to take them seriously.
