your comments, while backed up by previous commenst about how this forum should be run, do not answer my question. aren't some of the reasons for being car free have to do with the things about car culture we dont like and how we can advocate to make a better world. for instance, by going car free

Car-free forum is about practical how-tos, not expressing hatred for cars. It's about stuff like, how does a carfree person shop for groceries, or get to work fairly dry when it's drizzling, or go fishing, or carry home some boards from the harware store.

It's NOT about how ugly metal-flake paint on El Caminos is, or how car drivers are more likely than bikers to beat their wives because they don't get exercise to "work it out" or how much SUV drivers/Volvo drivers/old drivers/young drivers etc piss us off. THAT is not going to help someone reading the forum figure out how to get to their job, for which they have to wear a suit, relatively unmussed.

If this is just a *****ing about cars forum, those THINKING about going carfree just laugh along with the comments and/or get peeved at the gripes without useful info, and move on. In their car.

Is that really what you want, Secret?

Secret, the idea is, we need more butts on bikes. What's going to get more butts on bikes? More ranting about how awful car-culture is? That's fun, and feels good, but it's not going to change the mind of a car-addicted person who doesn't honestly know it's possible to live car-free. We're here to show them HOW. That will get more butts on bikes.

I'd hate to see Secret leave. For one thing, in my heart of hearts I share his feelings about the negative side of car culture. One practical problem I have with being carfree is that when I tell people, they often go right into defensive mode and I have to work to overcome that. Overt velofascism doesn't win over potential supporters.

I hope he's just young and not an idiot. He's gotten inordinately butt-hurt about which subforum to post his rants in.Personally, I think there should be a subforum for all those who feel they haven't got the time to capitalize and punctuate properly.

[QUOTE=Platy] One practical problem I have with being carfree is that when I tell people, they often go right into defensive mode and I have to work to overcome that. QUOTE]

That is so true. It amuses me how people immediately launch into a defense of why they drive when they discover I don't drive a car everywhere I go. It's the kids, or have to haul a large load, or have to drive too far, or have to dress nice for work, etc. I don't even ASK them why they drive because I don't care, but they often put me in a position where I feel obligated to point out to them ways they can achieve their needs without their car. I don't want or need to be a crusader. I'm perfectly content to be the example of a person that does it. Not biking simply because they don't want to is a perfectly legitimate reason. Please spare me the justifications and excuses.
