I want to get an led tail light for my commuter. All the lights I've seen mount on the seatpost but I use a rack trunk which would completely obscure the light. Also, the trunk itself does not have a suitable place to mount the light.

Does anyone have any suggestions for mounting a light directly to the rack? Perhaps there are lights or mounts made specifically for this? Thanks in advance.

There are blinking lights that mount on reflector brackets. I have a white one at the front - I think it is 'CatEye'. If you get one of these, you could mount it on either the back of the rack or the seat stay.

There are many places to mounts lights ... sometimes they're even on the bike. Helmets and backpacks make nice choices, too.

In my experience, the higher the better, and the more movement or flashing the better. I put reflective tape on my cranks and inside my rims. This causes a strobe effect that unmistably comes from a bike. I have a NiteRider Digital to power the front lights (including the all-important flashing front light) and for the LED on the back (mounted midway between the seat and tire ... I have no rack or panniers). I have another LED on my pannier. And my helmet has reflective tape as well. Although I don't have it on now, in the wintertime I'll have a flasher mounted on the back of my helmet.

I always have my blinking front and rear lights on (the NiteRider). I can't tell you how good these are for attracting attention.

Basically, at night, I look like Las Vegas on wheels.

I have a Trek blinking disco rear light which I attached to the rear rack. There should be an area toward the back end of the rack where a bolt can be screwed in.

I got one of those Blackburn EX2 racks and ended up with a similar dilemma. Here's what I did:
I got an LED light that had a clip for your clothes instead of a seatpost mount. The clip part screwed in, so I removed the clip portion. To mount it to the rack, I went to the hardware store and got two household 3-hole mirror mounts and two #10 screws. Clamp the mirror mounts together to the rear of the rack and use the remaining hole to screw in the light. It works great and the mount cost me about 90 cents in parts. I'd show you a picture of it but I smashed the hell out of it yesterday.

My gosh! Anders "stole" my idea. ;)
I made a tail light mount a lot like that.
