Classic & Vintage - Tange Tubing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
How does the Tange tubing lineup go. How does it compare to Reynolds.
Tange made different grades of tubing. I think their topline tubing was Prestege which was comparable to Reynolds 531. I'm not sure if they made equivalents of 531SL or 753.

Reynolds 531 was made in a variety of double butted gauges and weights, as well as "straight gauge". Tange made comparable tubing in each weight class.
"Ranking" tubes from Reynolds and Tange does not work. There was no "top stuff". Prestige tubing was very light, which made it ideal for some purposes, and absolutely wrong for others. Each tube set was the "best" for its intended purpose. The tubes intended for an ultra-light time trial bike were the best for that goal. The beefy straight gauge tubes used for tandems were the best for the purpose.
Many custom bike makers "mix and match" tubes from different makers. Schwinn did so on extra-large Paramounts as well as special ultra-light weight Paramounts. "Best" meant getting the "right" tube for each bike.

The Prestige was actually their top stuff during the '80s, and comparable to 753. I'm pretty sure it was also heat treated, and super-thin.
From what I understand, any of the butted Tange tubesets were excellent quality, though not all frames constructed of it were carefully built...
