Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'm going to be building a rigid SS mountain bike out of a Kona Munimula frame. I was wondering what other people are using for cranks. I probably want a 32 or 34 tooth chainring.

I'm using TWO cranksets on mine! The right features a beautifully cast Shimano Exage with 110 bcd spider and 170mm arm. The left is something else...Shimano I think, also 170mm with something like the same Q-factor as the first. Watch them extractor threads, kiddies!
I have a 40t ring up front and 20t freewheel out back. It gets me around though most of the time the places I go seem to involve more climbing and it might be nice to gear down a touch.
32 ring here, it's easy to get. 34 is quite common also. Then your cog can be easily chosen to give you a 2:1 ratio or just slightly under/over.

I'm using a pair of Dimension cranks and a 32 t chainring.
XT cranks and 36x16 for logging roads and old railroad beds so far (I know, I know I'll lower it for the real mtb experiences to come..... ;)

truvativ stylo GXP, with the external bottom bracket. super stiff and responsive!
I've got a set of Truvativ 5D's that I got for cheap off nasbar. They came with a 38t chainring and a bash guard.

any mtb crank will work for you really.
may i just warn you to either go with the new external bearing kind or an older school square taper set. isis bb's suck!
i got an old square taper set of truvativ stylo's and a salsa ring. i run a puny gear ratio of 34:20. it gets me through the hills..... being faster for me is really a game of using my brakes less.
oh and there are those that say you need a bashguard; but i am not one of them. bmx chainring bolts and your single ring up front slide over rocks and logs easy greasy. but you shouldn't really hit em in the first place it's bad form. ;)
Truvativ stylo w/32 ring , pre gxp. I like them. never had a problem 2 plus years. No big fan of isis though.
White Indutries Eno with 34 ring. Had them for five months now and they work as beautifully as they look.
Gotta go square taper though. At least it is a good excuse to get a phil wood bb

my 20 dollar sh!tmano bb is working well into it's second year with no signs of dying, so i don't know that for me i'd need/want to spend/waste the money on a phil BB but i am sure it must be puuurdy!

i use a cook brothers crank with a 34T salsa ring, and no bash guard, its frickin beautiful. im with max, if you need a bash guard you're riding sloppy!
for a 110 BCD the smallest you can go is 34T
for a 94 BCD it is possible but difficult to find a 30T, 32T is easier to get.
for 104 4-bolt the smallest is 32T
keep that in mind when buying your cranks.

The only problem with a Phil BB is that you don't get to see much of it.
I'm using Profile 175's. Heavy, but I know I'll never break them.

Definately. And I hope I don't get to see it for another 10 years.
