When I ride and train (MTB) the people I'm with often comment on amount of profuse sweating from my body. It seems I sweat twice as much as any body else. It's as if I stood in a shower with my clothing on. Is this normal and healthy and are there any inherent dangers in sweating too much other than dehydration and mineral loss?

I've always thought that the better your physical condition, the more you sweat because your entire system gears up immediately and starts to cool the body down.

There are likely severeal conditions for which excessive sweating is a symptom. Mention it to your doctor.

If you're concerned about it, see a doctor. Do you drink a lot of water?

I've often noticed that people who sweat more drink a lot of water... like a gallon or more. And keep in mind, sweating is a cooling mechanism by the body, so perhaps if you're getting very overheated from your ride, it could be normal, provided that you're drinking enough water.

If you're not drinking a lot of water, and you're still sweating a lot, maybe it would be a good idea to see your doctor and have a physical... just in case....

I'm not sure if this helps...but I played basketball with a kid who would sweat buckets.

Everyone would have a little spot on their back an maybe a little on their brow. He would have a shirt that you could literally ring the water out of.

Thats just the way he was...he was otherwise a healthy guy. He said that his father had the same problem...so check see if it runs in your family.

sweating buckets is great. keeps me cool. all i need to do is drink lots of water and i can go all day. guys are fainting in this midwest heat and humidity and i'm dripping wet and cool. that said, it's a little awkward in social situations...

Hyperhidrosis... I have it. I sweat even when I'm standing still. I sweat all the time. Go see your doctor, s/he could give you meds to try and supress it, or corrective surgery (shutting off your sweat valves :( doesn't sound too good... I don't wanna do it).

Anyway... sweating is sweating. I don't think it bothers anyone when you're engaging in a physically demanding activity, so "don't sweat it" ;)

I sweat like a mother and so does my bro and my pops. My father is very healthy even though he has his bad habits. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I know sweating all the time sucks. Is hyperhidrosis bad for you or is just an inconvience?

I sweat alot when I do really long climbs. I have nothing to compare to however :p The only thing that bites about sweating is when it drips into your eyes.

Yep. Sweat in my eyes SUCKS. And I too sweat like a pig. I can sweat before I get to the end of my street on the start of my ride. No one I ride with is as bad as I am. I just drink a lot more fluid. I usually drink about 48oz fluid in a 35 mile ride and all my buddy's have only have 1 bottle of fluid. So yea, I wouldnt worry about it. As it will help keep you cooler at least.

Sounds just like me. Gawd, I sweat more than a fat lady squeezing into spandex. :D Especially when I'm out climbing a mountain at a very slow speed in the heat. I sweat so much, my gloves and handlebars get wet and I need to squeeze tighter to keep hold. And I always get salty sweat into my eyes and all over my sunglasses. Today, it looked like I just stepped out of the shower - you could literally see the sweat drops fall off of me up the mountains. That's why I always take Gaterade in my water bottles and water in my 100oz CamelBak. You do not want to get dehydrated or cramped. It sucks so very, very much when you've got another 20 miles to go, but need to stop every couple of miles to unlock you legs as they stiffen up like boards.

It's only dangerous if you stop sweating. That means heat exhaustion (stroke?) and your body cannot itself down anymore. That's very dangerous. Immediately stop and get more fluids in your body.

That's it? Only 48oz for 35 miles? Your profile says you are from Texas - isn't it hot as hell out there this time of year? When I'm out riding for 35 miles, I drink over a gallon of water & Gatorade and still suck down more fluids once I get home (100oz CamelBak, 2 water bottles). BTW - and I barely need to take a leak when I get home, that's how much I sweat out.

I'm down in texas too, occasionally loving the 101-degree days we're getting.

I usually drink 24oz before, 72oz during, and 24oz after for a 40 mile ride. Unless it's humid. Then count on that same amount for a 20 mile ride. I have no idea how much I would drink for 40 miles, since I've never made it that far when it's hot and humid. I usually end up collapsing in a pool of sweat and disappointment at around mile 10 and am forced to turn around. It's not the riding that kills me, I just can't deal with the heat. I'm movin up north at the soonest convenience.

I must not sweat much, because I go through only about 20-30 oz. of water per 25 miles on an average-temperature day. I've never measured how much I drink after a ride, I just keep a glass of ice water around and keep filling it the rest of the day.

Yes, I'm in Texas. But I dont ride in the heat of the day due to my work schedule most of the time. And our local group rides arent a real high intensity. But in race conditions I will still only drink about 48oz for a 25 mile race. But I do get down about 20 before and then about another 48 or more afterwards. I tend to get sick at my stomach if I drink too much while riding. And usually dont have to P when I'm done either. And it is hotter than hell right now. Yesterday was the 1st day in a week below 100. It was 99 then back to 101 today. Thats why I'm here on this computer versus outside riding. LOL
