I live in Richardson, TX which is just north of Dallas. They just extended the DART rail up to my area so I've been riding my bike to the station and from another station to work. I only have to pedal about 2 or 3 miles total. It takes just a little longer than driving on average. I love cars and driving but it just sucks to drive to work in traffic.
I leave the house about 5:50AM because I'm not supposed to have my bike on the train between 6 and 9AM or 3 and 6PM. I have to go through one stop light and one stop sign. The stupid stop light is sensor activated so I usually have to hit the crosswalk button. I ran it a couple of times but figured that I will eventually get caught if I do that every morning.
I'm really enjoying it and the exercise is good for me even though it's a short ride. When it gets cooler I may try to bike the whole way which is about 10 miles by car. It probably wouldn't be smart to take the same route by bike.
I ride a Raleigh MT-40 hard tail mtn. bike that I got in college. I replaced the worn out knobbies with 1.25" semi slicks. I had to repack the wheel bearings to get it moving better and I still need to get the wheels trued and service the bearings in the pedal rotation (don't know what that's called). My gears and brakes needed adjusting too. The gears are doing OK but I will probably need to replace the cogs and chain soon.
