I'm trying to figure this thing out, and their website is less than helpful...

I'll be in MKE for July 4 weekend and want to try riding a 'drome for my first time. There are no races/clinics on the schedule for that weekend. Does that mean the rest of the time is reasonably available for newbies like me to bring my bike on in for a spin?

Anyone?

Yes, it is open to the public when there aren't races or motorpaced training. I don't know if Washington park 'closes' at 10pm or something, but there isn't anything to physically keep you off the track at any time. A helmet is required though, however on non-race days I haven't ever seen anyone around to enforce this.

I think it would be either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. I still have to perfect the bike-flying problem though...

Yup, Friday afternoon, 3-4ish. I'll have to ride my brother's too-big-for-me bad conversion fetish frame, since my baby doesn't seem to want to fly tomorrow. boo. i just hope i don't get kicked off the track for riding with bullhorns.

You won't get kicked off for bullhorns on a Friday. Have fun, but watch out for 10 year-old kids riding POS Wal-Mart bmx bikes in the wrong direction. Also stow any gear in your car, or set it in the infield where you can keep an eye on it when you're riding.

chimbly - did you ever make it out to the velo during your visit?

let's not talk about it.
after being stuck with an $80 oversize charge for checking my bike, my connection in philly was cancelled, along with 1/2 the (all overbooked) flights. I ended up spending 14 hours in the philly airport chasing standby lists, 22 hours total travelling from DC to Milwaukee, and my bike, which was lost in the shuffle, wasn't returned to me until Sunday evening.
