Mountain Biking - New Trek

I am entering the MTB world.
And I am starting a cyclepath.

I am a casual biker, I go through a few trails, but not jumps, or anything elite. I will be mainly be
bike-hiking (iunno what its called) with it. Just around flat dirt trails, stuff like that. Quite a bit of city trips to mall, burgerking and back, that sort of thing, will this bike meet my expectations??

i would recomend the specialized hardrock sport. i think it suits what you are going to do.

i dont think people in this forum consider flat trails mountain biking.

I would recommend a hybrid bike as opposed to this one. You'll go faster on road and those flat trails but you can't really go off road with it.

If you are going on dirt trails at all steer clear of the 'hybrid' bike.

The bike you listed will serve your purpose.

Put some fast rolling tires on there, a semi-slick if you will(I wouldn't go with full slicks though if you are planning on ducking in dirt trails occasionally) like a Michelin jet s or a bontrager revolt ss and have at it.

I picked up a Gary Fisher Wahoo in your price range, and I'm very pleased. :D

That bike is only $250. Spend the extra $100 and get a Trek 4300. That frame alone will be worth it. That is a high ten frame similar to what you will find in Walmart. The 4300 has the same frame as Trek's $700 bikes. The components are also much better on the 4300. I have 2 4300's with over 10,000 miles on them. They are good bikes.

That bike is only $250.

In common usage when someone, somewhere in the world says "dollar" they mean USD. It's not being myopic or U.S. centric, it's accepting the reality that the USD is the world standard.

I'll second the Specialized Hardrock recommendation. I've had one for three months and it holds up well for trail riding, it's also very nice on the road. I use my bike to haul my son around in a trailer all the time. This bike will do everything that you want.

well, in us dollars that is $284.36
so the trek is definitely in range.
Unless you go used, a steel frame is gonna be your only option I believe.
That being said, the hardrock is a bit less than a hundred dollars over.
So, if you could spend more than 350 canadian, more like $430.75 Canadian,
your options would open up a little more. But budgets are budgets for a reason.
the 820 with some semi-slicks will suit your needs nicely.

Well, how about a Giant Boulder? They sell for $280 USD, and it's a decent frame.

On which bike? I don't think that the 820 can use discs.

I like my Trek 3900 (no disc brakes) and it seems to fit your intended purpose and probably your budget as well.
