I just joined the forum and have recently started bike commuting.

I've been wanting to get a tandem for me and my wife. She has a disability in one leg and walks with a limp. She used to ride an upright bike as a kid (despite the leg) but she can't do it anymore.

I imagine that it will mainly be me chauffering her around but I think she can pedal some if I provide enough speed to keep us balanced and keep up the rotation.

Any opinions on what type of tandems would be best suited for us? Recumbent maybe?

One choice to think about might be the Bilenky ViewPoint, which offers a combination of the recumbent and trad frames, along with independent pedaling.

I haven't ridden one of these, but from appearances it looks like it might be a good choice for the situation you describe.

That's a cool bike. I'll have to check it out. Do any other recumbents come with a hand crank option?

Greenspeed tandem recumbent trike, with independent pedaling system. It can't fall over, she pedals when she wants to, its awesome.

UK tandem builder George Longstaff makes tricycle tandems, the upright kind, not recumbents. They are not cheap, but he is the best tandem maker in the UK.

I know this is an old thread but it comes up first in Google under "disabled tandem", so I thought I'd add to it.

Charlotte's Tandems is a UK charity that lends tandems to disabled people for free. We have lots of info on our website www.charlottestandems.weebly.com . Please have a look and let anyone know who might like to borrow tandem from us.
