Mountain Biking - Hydraulic Disc Brakes-Magura Louise

Hey so since 7 of you know I bent my brake levers, I found a deal on these Magura Louise Hydraulic disc brakes and they would only cost me like $50 more then getting a set of freaking levers. So I was wondering what kind of maintenance should I expect from these? I'm worried because people post all the time about squealing disc brakes, missing brake fluid, messy tune ups etc. etc. Now, I probably won't touch it at home but it just seems like they are a pain in the butt compared to my rim brakes. I don't need the extra stopping power, but if I can get a set of hydraulic disc brakes (front only) for $50 more then a set of brake levers, I don't see why not.

I have the front disc tabs on my fork, but I don't think my wheel is a disc wheel. Does it matter? if so, I immediately abandon this thought. Unless...I have a sale on a new wheel too, but nah.

It should be okay. Obviously the hub needs to have a disc flange.

my mechanical skills are terrible. How much maintenance do these bad boys require. Because probably every time I'll take it into the shop. I couldn't even adjust brake pads properly. It was awful :(

I am not the best person to answer this. I just know from auto/motorcycle hydraulic brakes that I will be fine. I recently purchased HOPE brakes...but cannot yet comment on maintenance.

As far as disc flange...I simply meant is there a spot on your hub or not for mounting the disc? That's all. If not, then you will need to buy a hub that does allow this. :)

If you don't cut the hose for the brake it should be relatively maintenance free. I run Magura brakes and I am very happy with them. The only downside is once you have the front disc brake you will probably go out and change the rear as well. :)

You definately have to have a disc front hub. Without that you won't have any way to mount the rotor.

Aye, this would appear to be true as my bike has no such front hub. I could go and buy the WTB Dual Duty Free ride rim for cheap but all of a sudden this becomes an upgrade fest. Bah, I'll probably just have to get new levers and replace the other things as they die. Thanks for the help.

Would Deore be good enough?

Deore would do a great job. Also check out the Avid's. They make some nice levers for the money as well. Either way you should be happy.
