Has anybody had their fixed stolen? I never lock mine when I go into a shop. I imagine that someday I'll see somebody trying to ride away on it and, not realizing how it works, fall over. Any stories?

i see plenty of "my bike was stolen" or "my wheels were stolen" or (best one) "i was borrowing my friend's fixie and someone stole the wheels" listed in the SF craigslist. Many of them fixed gear. And I always think of those minimalist locking techniques I see on fixed gears...one small krypto, hung around the top tube...the wheels saying "steal me." my bike probably looks pretty geeky with a lock around the front wheel and frame, and a cable looped through the rear wheel...but i havent lost a bike to thieves in 20 years, knock-on-lugged-steel.
apparently the whole "bic-in-the-kryptonite" thing was revived by an SF guy whose new custom wheels were stolen off his Pista. They weren't locked, of course, but he told his friend about it, his friend mentioned the bic thing, Pista-man posted it somewhere (here?) and the rest is history...
yeah. get a lock.

What do bike thieves do with the bikes the steal? It seems to me that if they take them to a pawn shop they will not get anything near the value of it, and a bike shop would know that the bike the thief was trying to fence is stolen, I just dont get it.

well i dont know where youre from, but I've seen like ghetto painted wood signs advertising "$5 bikes" in the summertime... i always figured thats where you can buy your bike back at a reasonable cost from the person who stole it

Ebay and CL. Make your description vague, and I'd imagine you could be pretty safe. Or just part it out.

When was the last time you fell over trying to ride a fixie? It's not that hard. If the assumption that some sort of special skill is required to ride a fixed gear is all that stands between your bike a thief then you're a very lucky man no one has shown you how worng you are.

Buy a lock dude...you live in a pretty major city...if you indeed leave your bike unlocked, it will get stolen, its just a matter of when. Good luck!

Two stolen , got one back in same condition and other still out there with my name carved in it 5 times.

I have a funny stolen fix story. Bike locked to fixed bike, owner of first bike leaves, fix is now unlocked, owner of fix walks home drunk, fix is stolen. It was found the next day, lying on the sidewalk a few blocks away, with a bent front wheel and a bit of blood on the ground beside it.
Even $5 will get one that much closer to a gram of crack... trust me, I know these kind of people.

i had my bike locked like this at my gf's near duboce park, and it got completely stripped except for what was ulocked down. cable locks can easily be cut.
