So he finds this late 70's era Peugeot in his rental basement. Here are some of the stats:
Reynolds 531
Maillard hubs
Simplex group
Mafac Comp brakes
Chrome dropouts f&r
nice leather saddle
The serial # is 7022243 on a little rivetted plate under the BB.
Thanx!

Sounds like the top of the line model.
You can tell by the 531 tubing and the chrome rear dropouts.
Does the saddle have a frame built of rectangular alloy bar, rather than round, chromed steer bar?
Is it white?
For many of us, this was our entry into the world of fine cycling. They cost $750 in today's dollars rather than the $1300+ that Schwinn was asking for the Paramount.
If you ride it, expect a lot of baby-boomers to stop you and get misty-eye'd.

Sounds like a PX10, let's see pics, I can get it to within a few years by the decals and some other details.
It is almost definitely a PX-10 or PX-10E, probably from the early to mid 1970s. If it fits you, it's a keeper. If the frame size is 55cm C-T, it's junk; PM me for my mailing address and I'll be glad to dispose of it for you.

It's a bit big for me. But then again, it's not mine :D
I'll wait and see what the friend is going to do with it. He isnt a very active biker. It really is a nice looking bike. The chrome dropouts stopped me straight in my tracks. Paint is black, dont have pic's (sorry, just have a mini-dv). How in the world it got stashed in that cellar is beyond me.
As for the seat frame I'll have to take another look at it but that would risk my interest in it. My buddy is a keen horsetrader and I'm betting he will lose interest in it and give it over to me for cheap. I know some of these beaut's came with the Brooks saddle. This might be it.
thanx a ton, guys...I'll keep ya'll posted!
(ps, my 10.00 ZebraKenko is looking mighty fine here in the den with me. It got a good cleaning and is awaiting tires)

I think that the unusual black color makes it extra valuable-as long as it's original. I've never seen a black one and I used to work in a Peugeot shop.

I've seen a couple black PXs, equiped with a gold Simplex Super LJ/Stronglight drivetrain. Beautiful. If it's got that setup and is 62cm, I'm probably interested.
My PK is black, it was available in that colour for a single year (1979)

Sunds like a PX10: French (?) 531 green decals on seattube and forks?
Owned a black PX in the mid-70s; however it was white when I bought it (used) from a young racer. Repainted it black and used to get a lot of comments on it, as most PXs where white; in Canada, they sold quite a few brown PXs; go figure . . .

Yes, you got the 531 decals right. And the "3" is difficult to read because it is blocked by the design of the decal....looks almost like 501 but you can barely see midsection of the "3". I'm led to believe it's the stock paint. The only thing I dont like about the bike is the monstrously huge Simplex rear derailleur. :D

No, it's not a zombie thread. :D
My buddy was talking to me this morning and I suggested he try road biking as a solution to his excercise/conditioning questions. So he brings up the subject of that Peugeot in the cellar. He said he needs to get it out of there and spiff it up. I'm expecting him to drop it by the shop....he doesnt wrench on anything. This time I at least have an Iphone cam and will post some pics when (he better) it's dropped off.
