View Full Version : So what do you do with your CX bike?
In returning to cycling after 13 years away, I wanted to choose a bike that would match my riding style and needs. Initially, I was considering a road bike. On further thought, however, I chose a 'cross bike. Why? Aside from the fact that I've always wanted one since my days of racing back in high school, I now live in New York City, I only get to ride on Sundays and a few after work evenings if I'm lucky, and NYC is one big urban cyclocross anyway. I don't plan to race it, but I do plan to do everything from laps around Central Park to going off road in Riverside Park, and everything in between. And yes, I might commute if the right job comes along to allow me so. It's the perfect high performance, high versatility, attention deficit disorder bike!
So what does everybody else do with thier cyclocross bikes? Does everybody race them, or do they have other uses for them?
daily commute/regular road riding and training/occasional off-road - I haven't ever raced it and probably won't as it's my daily transport that needs to last at least another 4 years before it pays for itself.

Its my do it all spare bike and wet weather bike. Probably the bike I would take if I were going to go on travel to a place I did not know.

I curse at it as I try to extricate the fixed gear from the clutches of the cx bike's handlebars and barcons.

ride it on the road. sometimes fireroads and singletrack. i did a race last season and it was the hardest thing i've done in a while. i plan on doing more races this season, but only if i train a bit for em.

Made it a singlespeed and use it for just about everything. Its a crosscheck by the way.

Daily commuting, Trail Watch patrols twice a week and some recreational riding. Occasional hard pack and single track. Never raced and I'm not fixing to race it. It's also a Surly Cross-Check.

There’s not too many CX event’s around here, but there’s a lot of OffRoad (Marathon as well)
A CX bike is great for that purpose. It sometimes involves a great deal of running, but there again.
That’s what I really used to do (and recently took up again) Athletics Track & Field.
I also use it as a commuter since it’s so much better than my commuter (witch is a very good bike, just not that good.)
It’s also the bike I bike I would take if I were going to go on travel to a place I did not know
and my ‘extreme weather condition’ bike.

I'm using my Soma Double Cross as an all-rounder. I commute on it, ride it for fitness and recreation on the weekends. It seems to make a terrific all-rounder.
i ride it on the road. i reeeealllly like the disc brakes it has....
Train with it, race it, and in the winter it is my fixed gear bike.

Commute, road rides, fire roads. I just bought a second wheelset for it on ebay which I intend to mount road tires on, and I might then get some real fatties for the cross wheelset. It's really been the ultimate all-around bike solution.

So what does everybody else do with thier cyclocross bikes? Does everybody race them, or do they have other uses for them?
I bought a Bianchi Axis to serve as my one-and-only "do everything" bike. I will be picking up a second wheelset with some road tires soon. I'm really enjoying this bike and can hardly wait for the weather to change. We've been on a really nasty hot/humid streak here in upstate NY. When I'm finished walking my mail route in this weather, I don't have the desire to get on the bike and ride (although I have logged some time on the mag trainer in front of the living room AC unit :p ).
Ironically, the only thing I probably WON'T do with it is race cyclocross....
Good riding,
