General Cycling Discussion - Farewell Garfield

Last night on my commute home I saw something disturbing on the road.

It was a small, furry, headless creature.

I was shocked and stunned. It was Garfield - my Garfield. He must have slipped off my bike on the commute the night before.

I've had a small Garfield clipped to the back of my bike since 1987. He has travelled thousands and thousands of kilometres with me. He has crossed Australia 4 times and was going to come with me again on my Perth to Hobart ride next year.

To find him there was pretty sad but to have to search further along the road to find his head was very traumatising. (I still haven't found his eyes.)

Time for a total frame-up rebuild, make him stronger, lighter, faster than before

RIP Garfield.

I suspect "RIP" is how his head came to be separated from his body.

I truely believe that the only way to console yourself
is to buy a new frame, or bike. Garfield would want
you to, also Garfield likes italian (hence the propensity
for lasagne) so Pegoretti, Colnago, Pinarello etc. would
suite nicely (and campagnolo is a must).

You must immediately go out and buy a kitten. No, wait--you can't strap a live kitten to your bike! That would have been infinitely more disturbing...

Sorry to hear about your loss Media. At least he went doing the thing he loved best, riding with you. Alas, poor Garfield.:(

I sympathize with you.

My grandson got a McD toy of Quasimodo and renamed him "Quasi-Mojo". We strapped him to the front of the bike and he's been riding with my for 9 (accident free!) years. I start to panic when I think of where I would be if I lost the little Q.

It's been a busy day, but I wanted to be sure and get back here and offer my condolences. So sorry for your loss.

Maybe it would be a good time to visit the land of misfit toys and pick out a new riding partner, then something good could come out of this tragedy.

I know it can never fill the void that your beloved Garfield left behind, but I found a small lost Tigger on the roadside while commuting, and if it will help you heal your broken heart, I can mail him to Australia for you. :p

I was just sitting here thinking about all that Garfield and I had been through. We even went to Canada and cycled around then Rockies for a week together.

I was thinking about how I haven't told my kids yet and I realised that I have had Garfield longer than I've had my children. Then I thought, "Garfield was with me for 5 years before I even met my wife."

I still look around that section of road as I pass to see if I can spot a pair of plastic eyes looking up at me.

He couldn't have lost his eyes from the fall.

He was probably run over by a MOTORIST!

Your sad tale reminded me of a garage sale I visited last year. After I bought a few hardware items and put them on my rack, the proprietor insisted that I accept a small stuffed Garfield. When I protested that I had nowhere to carry him safely on the bike, he brought out a plastic strap-tie and put Garfield on my handlebar. I completed my garage sale rounds with Garfield, then returned home, cut the strap, and donated him to an orphanage.

:angel: Garfield has most certainly joined the biker's in the sky...may he live long and prosper in the great stuffed beyond!
