Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - CMWC 2005... who's going?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

hey guys... just wanna say that i am excited as hell to get away from los angeles for a few days, period--let alone being able to go to new york for a 5-day bikefest! yay.
i haven't been to the city since my early teens, and that experience consisted of my all-too-zealous dad taking our unsuspecting family to all major tourist attractions in the space of 3 or fewer days. just wanna know... what's riding like over there? i know the bike scene is pretty large and in charge, but do any of you locals have advice, stories, places i have to see on a bike, etc? also... i know the weather is gonna be hot and humid. CA gets hot, but it's always dry heat. what kind of clothes are most comfy for riding a lot out there? and is it warm at night?--like i don't need to bring anything more than a sweatshirt, right? (i'm trying to fit everthing i'm bringing in one fairly small carry-able bag.)
okee, i'm finished. hope to see y'alls there. woo hoo.

I'd leave the sweatshirt at home, unless you want to trade it. It's hot as hell and raining off and on.

Let me be the first to give you an early "welcom to NYC" As an LA transplant, i'm glad someone from city of angels is gonna be coming to represent, cuz I'm going but only as a volunteer. As far as clothing goes, you'll need your parka and snow pants...
I would bring a long sleeve shirt for the nights which can get cooler when it is not 90 degrees here.
If you want to get some uninterrupted training rides I would head over to Prospect Park in Brooklyn and ride the 3.3 mile loop.
Have fun at the CMWC!

leave the sweatshirt at home, but a long sleeve t and a rain jacket might not be a bad idea
any fabric that wicks perspiration away is comfy to ride in, by my ass is still usually riding in a cotton t, soaked to the bone when i get there
some good places to ride:
central park loop 6.2 or 3.3 (i think) miles, depending on if you do the whole or half loop
prospect park loop 3.3 miles
Anywhere at night, especially manhattan
im a fan of hunters point in queens...****ty roads but great views of the manhattan skylline
kissena velodrome, if you are into that
im also a fan of midnight rides down ocean avenue in brooklyn down to coney island...might just be me though
definately beware of every vehicle on the road though...no one in this city can drive for s**t and tehy could care less about bikers
hope you enjoy the city

Fo sheezy! (is that still cool? it's so hard to know.)
I'm doing the volunteer schtick and will probably be helping setup for Saturday in Jersey City per the email that went out this morning. Look for the tool trying to rile the natives with a Bosox cap. ;) Maybe if people want, we could have a Bike Forums meet-n-greet. Or maybe that's tardcore. Whatever.
See ya's there!
Havent talked to the guys here in columbus, but I wouldnt be suprised if about 5-8 represent this little town.I think 8 or 9 did the worlds and Seattle, Davey Rocket got 2nd overall I believe, im sure he will do well if he goes.I wish I could, but if I dont work, my little company doesnt stay in business(no vacations, gotta operate to own).

i'm already here. seen tons o' track bikes at the local shops (maybe people had their bikes shipped here...?), and in the streets. the anticipation builds.
i see no reason not to schedule some kind of meet - you outta towners might as well meet us losers anyway.
and not to worry trevor - i hate the yankees too. tho i'm not much of a baseball fan.

I just meet some people from seatle, australia, LA and ireland. Definately cool to see people from all over. I heard trackstar got cleaned out by outtatowners. I think it'd be cool to put names to faces.

Riding up there with some friends from Philly on friday. I decided just to volunteer, but ought to be fun times. If 2 other dudes from texas show up, im gonna register to race and have a texas team, doubtful though. See you there!
I'm in New York, but my bike is still in transit. Which events, if any, are posengers allowed to attend and which events can be spectatated while bikeless?

You should come to the Prospect Park races on Thursday night at 10pm. Meet at the Grand Army Plaza entrance. It's a fun time.

I second that, I think it'll be fun with a bikeforum race or a relay. A nice little warm up for the worlds.
I'm going, but I didn't register in time. Still wanna ride though.
Who can tell me if it's too late and if not where & how to go about this? :o

maybe it is slightly geeky to have a bikeforums meet-and-greet--however, the possibility of appearing geeky has not stopped me in the past. :) if you guys are doing something, post please. i'll be riding my hot hot red nishiki road bike... my would-be fixie schwinn is having issues and i'd rather not have too many surprises in NY. i think there will be enough of those... man i don't think i'm gonna sleep the entire time. and then back to work on july 5th! woo hoo.
To Wangster: who from LA? a bunch of my lovely los angeles crew just got there yesterday.

who was at union pool last night?
i was driving my girlfriend home from the airport at about 1am and saw a huge amount of track bikes hanging from the chainlink fence in front of union pool. a whole bunch were locked up across the street under the bqe. it was a sick scene.
have fun in nyc everyone!

Hey, everyone should come out to prospect park tonight and do the races. We're thinking team relays, maybe madison. It'll be fun and gives us a chance to meet everyone, especially outtatowners. We'll be at the main entrance, 10pm, rain or pitchblack...
any ideas on which events would be best for spectating? i'll be logging a fair amount of time at the beach and in front of the grill this weekend, but want to set aside some time to check out the worlds... any suggestions are appreciated, thx.

I think your best bet would be Saturday, the 1st part of the main race, the sprints & skids, the bunny hop, and whatever other track events they've got lined up.

Last minute nerd ID tip: if you see a guy walking around with a dog-and-crossbones tattooed on his right calf with "Sascha" written underneath in piratey script, that's me. Feel free to say, "yo" or give me a slap upside the head. Whatever's customary.

Hi guys!! Hi!! Ceya What's going on?
This is Tomity from Tokyo Japan
CMWC started on June 29.
I saw website of NYBMA.
http://nybma.com/events/cmwcpixalready.php
I found some acquaintances.
It is heard that about 20 people are participating from Japan.
I was not able to go to CMWC.
Instead,I requested my friend's TATSUYA OKI to take CMWC Tomity Keirin goods.
It is a souvenir from me to CMWC.
Please inform me of the impression if you get it. (Private Messages)
Please tell me the talk if you did from Japan.
Please enjoy you of the CMWC participation.
your friend in cycling,
Tomity
we met your friends, they were trading tokyo messenger shirts for cadence shirts. there were 500 people at warsaw bar.polish social club, the people who owned the bar had a bad system. thug bouncers, no bike parking except 3 blocks away, so we went to free pizza night at capones, they also did free redstripe from midnight to 1am. today is a big day here, will post photos later tonight.

I have a ton of photos (mostly just the races because I was too "busy" the rest of the time to be taking photos). Here's one from my hotel hallway for my BikeForums family, catch more at www.zweknu.org/pics/gal.rhtml?alb=cmwc05
Thanks especially to Msngr for showing a guy a good time. Sorry about crapping out in CP.

What a memorable weekend.
Msngr, get well soon man. Sorry I didn't get to catch you out there...I saw your bike though. :/
Wangster, Lightgraphs, Ceya, good seeing you all there.
I managed to catch a couple of days, did some rides, helped out a little, bombed around the course and knocked my wheel waaay out of true. Met riders from all over - you Toronto folk are good peoples. ;)
So I finally got around to uploading some photos. Hope they show up.
Thanks BT for catching saturday's events, I forgot the cam. Nice work.

Leaving Jersey City for good and doing the group ride
http://www.uploadhouse.com/images/603697964bikexodus.jpg (http://www.uploadhouse.com/)
The group was spread out all over. There were many of us on the road, everywhere. At one point we paused in Hoboken:
http://www.uploadhouse.com/images/822271173hobobikes.jpg (http://www.uploadhouse.com/)
Wangster, sorry to lose you on the hill man. I had to get off that thing asap!
Then the cops showed up and things got a lil sketchy. It turned out okay.
One last shot as we crossed the GWB:
http://www.uploadhouse.com/images/797999525gwbikes.jpg (http://www.uploadhouse.com/)
After that, hung out and watched some flicks at the park. Good times.
I hope all those who visited our city had a good time too. Ride safe.
