Working on this Cilo roadster, I took down the front wheel and was able to find an 8mm axle locally. (it was stripped on one end)

Now to the rear... The Maillard hub has a 5-speed freewheel, and the rear dropout spacing is 126mm. I'm assuming I can run a 6-speed with no trouble. Will the readily-available 6-speed freewheels like this Nashbar item fit the Maillard threading?

I also found that the drive-side cone is shot. Hoping to find a replacement without too much trouble, though it might be easier to replace the entire axle set.

Cones from Atom, Normandy and Maillard hubs will probably work. Many were found on junky schwinns and many others, so if you find an old wheel from one of the other manufacturers, try the cones to see if they'll work. I believe it was chapter 12 in the old barnetts manual that used to cover this compatibility pretty well (I don't know what chapter it is in the new one, or if it's even included...)

I would expect that freewheel to work fine with the hub and the 126mm OLD. I can't, however, attest to it's quality. Do note, however, that your old freewheel and your new one might use different removal tools. I believe that the nashbar one uses the shimano splined Park FR-1.

Maillard/Atom/Normandy hubs have either French or English threading. Sometimes french freewheels are so indicated by an inscription on the back. Be careful because English freewheels will actually thread on to a french hub, but it is not a proper fit. On the otherhand, a french freewheel will not thread on to an english hub. There must be a lesson there somewhere...

If you don't use a spoke protector plate, you can generally use a 7-speed freewheel on a 126mm rear axle, although the "official" OLD for a 7-speed is 128mm.
