I was just reading a thread and now it seems that its gone. I have also had a couple of posts deleted in the last couple of days in this and the road section, and they were not distasteful or anything of that sort. Did the moderators get tighter policies or are they now on a power trip?

any comments from the mods? it may useful if they told us what everyone was doing wrong. more people would read postings than the terms and conditions of the forum.

i had a post deleted. but the post in question was made in a state of inebriation; I used the F word, cleverly spelled with two c's so to trick the censorship filter.

After a pint of Rogue and a split pitcher of Stella, I'm pretty F'ing funny.

I do understand Mayo publicized a PM from another Mod and has been a continual source of agrivation to many members and mods alike. He's been know the "push the limits" of the guidelines and the patience of members.

This reminds me of the time that everyone forgot that Bike Forums is (to the best of my knowledge) a PRIVATELY OWNED website and that the owners are free to set whatever danged rules they want. So if he/she/they deciedes for some meshuggeneh reason that race baiting and gay-unfriendly language are not the kind of things he/she/they want in the forums that he/she/they are paying for then it's kind of, like ohmigod, his/her/their call.

People need to stop blowing this shizz out of proportion. Hosts are allowed to kick people out of their parties. Pass the punch and lets get back to karaoke.

Okay - so the forums' streetsweepers have made a round. I know that Joe likes to have a place that is amiable to as many people as possible and this will usually mean that things will fall on the side of Walt Disney versus Larry Flynt. Guess what - it is a forum. And it is Joe's forum. Yes, you can say whatever you want, and then based on forum guidelines, the Mods can edit/delete/ban as they see fit. This type of action is usually discussion based also. Gone are the days (I hope) of the lone gunman Mod.
In short, if you don't like the way you are being "treated" in a forum, it would make the most sense to leave. If you walk into a burger joint and the menu states NO FISH STICKS, and you demand fish sticks, aren't you the fool for staying around and complaining that the burger joint does not carry fish sticks even though it is clearly stated on the menu?

Being a mod is a thankless job most of the time. I liked it, but the shoes were too tight. And I like fish sticks. So I made the change. I highly recommend that if this place frustrates you to no end and you can no longer bear to watch numerous, redundant messenger bag rating system threads disappear that you move on. I know I have.

There are a lot of books out there to be read. There are a lot roads out there to be ridden. And there are better conversations to be had. I dig this place as I have met a slew of really great people. But it is not the lifeblood of my existence.

There's my nickel, can I get three cents back?

exactly.

seems like some people around here are/were trying for a people's revolution, but unless assuming the monthly server hosting bill is mentioned in the manifesto, I don't see it happening.

Been around A LOT longer than most of you!

I just keep clear of all the angst posts. Life's too short to be frustrated for fun.

Still doing some reading and catching up on some of the history.

I understand that this is a private forum, and am thankful for the oppurtunity to have a place devoted to fixedgears and other cycles.

However, what frustrates me is the lack of uniformity. It is hard to know what the "accepted" rules and boundaries are when they are selectively enforced. I cant help but wonder if some things are moved/deleted because of the people who wrote them, or if other similar things that are not are just missed by one of the multiple mods. I cant help but feel that some of the mods do discriminate a little because this part of the forum is just a bunch of "punks".

Also it seems silly to me to allow a thread to rant on for 7 pages before finally declaring it offensive and deleting it. I assume that its because the mods are discussing whether it should come down, but I think at that point it escalates into a large looming problem that people need to make a big deal over when it gets deleted.

And now I am ranting...which I did'nt want to do. I am just stunned by the upheavel in the last 5 hours and am trying to sort out the reasons. Its making me sad.

it seemed like one of the mods was getting a little triggy happy on the delete button in those threads started by ke422an. they kept saying we should stay on topic about titanium but thats never what the thread was about. we should be able to flame that troll for what he is.

Let me try to offer some insight.

First of all, Moderators are volunteers. We spend time here when we can and in the spirit of appreciation for the Forums, have offered our services to help out.

We are all not online all the time. We do have lives other than Bikeforums. Bikeforums is also worldwide and thus we have members and moderators spread throughout.

Since we are all different, we have certain forums we frequent and others we rarely enter. I hang out mostly in Mountain Biking, even though I also ride the road and play around on my CX bike. And yes, I do have a singlespeed as well.

With that said, I don't frequent those forums. I just don't have the time!

Other Mods are on 24/7 because they want to, and/or can.

It's difficult to get a consensus and have a discussion with the other Mods that doesn't take 3 days.

In addition, not all threads are read by all the mods. One may find a thread intresting, a bit controversial yet not infringing on the guidelines. Another may be a bit more sensitive to a particular issue. This is why a thread may live for 11 hours before being moderated.

We try NOT to be militant overbearing controlling freaks.

We also try to squelch things via PM before the Mushroom Cloud appears.

Too late for this particular issue.

It is now being discussed and will be handled in "hopefully" the best possible manner.

We expect all members to self police the threads. The site has grown over the last few years exponentially. Heck, I remember posting, "Wow, 100 members online" threads when we were in our infancy. My how times have changed.

But the limits are too soft. What seemingly cannot be discussed within a thread can, instead, be referred too in a sig line or a username. As I pointed out in a post that was deleted (and a very tame post at that) there is a user that uses a handle of 'queerpunk'. Again is that to be considered self-descriptive or ?. I guess my point being, if words are the hotpoint of discussion, the slope will get as slippery as you want it too be.

Of course, the horse is swelling in this heat and the continual thumping will only bring more sink.

Yeah, kinda wondered that. I read the guidelines after creating my user name. I figured someone would have pm'ed by now about it.

when i push my feet down the thing goes forward, when i turn the bars it turns. It has wheels, a chain, a saddle, frame and a few other parts. I think we have come to an apex where the horse is so beaten, that we have started talking about why we have beaten it to its current state; thus the whole point of the initial beating has been lost.

Arent pneumatic tires wonderful!

This happens almost once a year. Since I've been on the forums (02), there's always a general bigger clash between mods and members on this forum. It's a vicious cycle with one gear turning (pun intended).

I am Mr. Mephistopheles. I rock Spartacus.

Overly heavy-handed modding kills a forum even faster than uncontrolled spamming. Banning popular (if controversial) regulars is another good way to kill a forum. I've been a forum addict from the time I first got online in 9th grade. I've watched forum after forum build momentum only to have a good thing ruined (and the forum killed off) by a combination of abusive users and unnecessarily extreme knee-jerk reactions on the part of those running the show.

I'd rather not see this place go too far down that slope, but the signs are already there. Neither side is innocent and each has some things to answer for.
