Just been thinking, I really enjoy my Trek 460, which makes me think I should take the dura ace set from my Univega (which I also found at goodwill) with full dura ace and put that on my Trek. Both are 6 speeds, does this seem like a waste, or a solid upgrade? Im not big on swapping out original parts, but the dura ace looks just great on the Univega. The cranks are dyna drive, I can get pedal adapters at loose screws, so whats the opinion. Thanks

I don't know how old that Univega is but if it came out in the late 80's when Dura Ace was introduced (same as the 600 series) and IF those components are all original then that means that the Univega frame may be their top of line bike which was a very good bike used by many pros on the cheap because they could get a superior bike for less then 1/2 the cost of any Euro bike. If that's the case then I wouldn't butcher it because you may have a rare bike.

Tell me what the frame decal says and I can tell you more. It's probably Ishiwata 021 (used in highend racing bikes, a superior tubeset to anything from Europe) or 022 (midrange tubing but still a nice tubeset) but it could be Tange-unfortunately I don't have much knowledge on the Tange, but they did make one extremily good tube set.

If the Univega frame is of lessor quality then I think it is, then a swap would be fine.

The Univega is from 82/83. The frame I have seen go on ebay for 250-300 range once before. The local shop stated that its a very nice frame, Ill check the tubing tonight. The bike shop sticker is Olympic Cycles, California - found nothing on the web for them. The frame does have some nice diamond cut outs and on the top of the fork. Its to large for me, just tempting to swap out, but its also nice to keep original for years to come.

It's been too many years for me to remember what the model Super Strata was all about-sorry. But the frame decal will help. I think the top of the line Tange back in those days was Prestige so if it says Tange Prestige, or Ishiwata 021 then that bike is a superb bike. I also cannot remember when Shimano switched from the 600 model name to DuraAce, but either the bike came originally with 600 or DuraAce that would be a very good indication of the quality of this bike. It's possible it came with 600 originally then when DuraAce came out the owner at some time afterwards swapped over.

I have a second or third level Univega frame from '82 and it's a pip.

It rides REALLY nice.

I use it as a reference ride when I'm tuning new designs.

Keep your big dollar frames. Make mine a Univega.

I think the dyna drive pedals went away in the early 80's. This is the last DA EX crank with dyna drive...I'm not sure but don't recall seeing DD after about 1984. Whichever year, $16 was a killer deal for a dura ace bike. I don't know much about the Univega, but you can (if you don't bung the flats or the hex head holes) keep a grouppo through many different frames. I bought a Super Record group new in 1985 to go on my trek 2000 frameset. This group has been on four different frames over the years, and now is probably worth more than all four frames. Go ahead and swap. It's good practice.
