Touring - Gotta love public libraries...

Welp. I finally got my new custom Gunnar on Saturday. Oh man. It rides great and is, in fact, lighter than my previous bike. I'll post pictures when I get back. I did a test ride of 50km broken down into 25KM stretches. Of course I did the dumb thing of going out for the 2nd ride and not have lunch. For those unaware, that was the day the temp reached about 43C with the humidex. D'oh! I was way too excited.

Of course the other thing I did is start a tour the next day. I'm in the midst of biking around Lake Simcoe (counterclockwise) and have made it to Orillia. In 4 days I've done about 454KM including the first day of 140KM (heat did me in on that day otherwise it might have been 200KM). I'll post more when I get back on Sunday. :D

Libraries are great while touring. All the libraries I used on my tour were very friendly toward me. They are great for updating journals, getting some A/C, using the bathroom for a quick sponge bath, reading maps, getting town info, or just relaxing for a bit. Some libraries will ask for an ID before using the internet but none ever denied my use of it.

One thing. If you haven't bathed in a few days like me, I tend to find my own space at the library.

I had a friend who had moved to Alaska for a few years. When she was accepted to grad school in Madison, WI, she drove back from Anchorage and every day or so she stopped at the town libraries along the way to use the internet and let everyone know her progress. Great resource.

I use the library all the time. Not for internet but for books. Public libraries are so overlooked by citizens because they don't have fancy websites or tv commercials like Barnes&Noble or Borders. When people want a book they first think about buying it at the bookstore when they should first try the local library.

It's too bad, I wish more people would use public libraries....I think they would if they knew all that the library offers for free. But I guess it might be a sort of social stigma about it like riding your bike, where poor people ride bikes because they can't afford a car; poor people go to the library because they can't afford to buy the book. I ride bikes and use the library and am neither poor nor broke.
