Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - I guess Radio Shack doesn't promote bicycles...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was on a ride around downtown tonight and I went to check out the newly opened Radio Shack headquarters. I was track standing on a corner just looking at the building. There was nobody around. This is around 7:30p.m. When out of nowhere some VERY large security guard starts whistling and yelling HEY at me. I looked over at him and he says, "NO BIKES ALLOWED." WTF? But the parking garage full of cars is okay apparently? This has to be one of the least bike friendly towns ever.

P.S. I am still in Fort Worth, Texas until the end of July. Then it's Austin.

In my pantry. There is a place called spiral diner now though. It's great. It has been winning all kinds of magazine awards as best vegan organic food in the country. It's always voted top tens. But yeah, this isn't an open minded area at all.

Seriously, Let me know If I can help out. Trust me, those aren't the only reasons FW sucks. Definitely keep me informed on the Alleycats. I went to Veggie Heaven a couple of years ago and it wasn't bad. I tried to go back a month ago and couldn't find a table and there isn't exactly anywhere to stand and wait. Are you familiar with Casa de luz? I think that's what it's called. I am hearing great things about it.

havent heard of casa de luz, but ill keep you in on the alleycats. im actually going to florida for a week or two (its flat as hell but its florida) so thats why the alleycats are on hold but if you wanted to jump right into some go check out eastside pedal pushers on E 6th a couple blocks off I35. they usually have some flyers for local stuff.

Spirochete diner?

Hey, it's Radio Schlock, in Ft Worthless. It's probably very liberal of them that they allow non-pickup-truck vehicles in their parking lot lol

Bicycles aren't allowed in most parking garages and if they are they're only allowed to lock up on the main level where the bike racks are.

casa = bland crap.

veggie heaven = spicy student food crap.

seriously, there is only one vegan place in austin that cooks food with taste and that's nu age cafe - in tarrytown.

you'll find that eating out here isn't worth the money. go to wheatsville and make yourself something good.

but yeah, welcome to austin.

alleycat at the peddler's on north loop (53rd) at 8p on jul 10th. el santo's revenge. i'll be defending my mexican wrestling mask.

Right..he was on a corner but the security guards were at a parking garage. They were telling him that he can't bring his bike inside the garage. I'm not sure if he looked like he was going to try to bring it in or what. I wasn't there.

I am still in Fort Worth, Texas until the end of July. Then it's Austin.

From Men's Health magazine

Fort Worth, TX
14th Fattest

America's Fattest Cities 2005

Fort Worth residents play less sports than the national average, have less gyms/health clubs for working out than last year, and rank high in donut shops per capita. Residents should beware of health risks related to being overweight, according to the CDC.

BRAGGING RIGHTS AND SOBERING FACTS:
# Fort Worth has more doughnut shops per capita than any other city in our survey — about four times the national average.
# Obesity is a weighty issue in Texas: More than one out of four adults is clinically obese, according to the CDC's Behavior Risk Factors Surveillance Survey. More than six out of 10 are at risk for health problems because of their weight, the same study found.
# Overweight Fort Worth residents might blame some of their problem on their commute: According to the Urban Mobility Report from the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University, the average Fort Worth commuter spends 34 percent longer commuting in peak traffic than the same trip would take during off-peak times — a little above average for cities in our survey. Commuter stress has been shown to cause increased levels of the hormone cortisol, which is implicated in obesity. Long commutes also cut into time that might otherwise be spent exercising or shopping for and preparing healthy food.

DETROIT !

Detroit, MI
3rd Fattest
The City with the Worst Eating Habits

America's Fattest Cities 2005

BRAGGING RIGHTS AND SOBERING FACTS:
# Motown has the highest percentage of clinically obese adults — more than 28 percent — of any city in our survey, based on CDC figures.
# Detroit has an exceptionally high percentage of residents whose weight is high enough to raise their risk of health problems — 64.6 percent, according to the CDC. Only Memphis has more unhealthfully overweight people.
# On a per capita basis, Detroit has fewer places to work out indoors (health clubs, gyms and yoga/aerobics studios) than any other city in our survey. Miami has the most.
# The Motor City has the least sporting goods stores per capita of any city we surveyed. It also has relatively few places to buy health food.
# Detroit's weather ranks it second only to Chicago for Least Fitness-Friendly Climate, based on National Weather Service data for temperature extremes, humidity, rain and snow.

Detroit is also very poor. 75% of the students in Detroit drop out after the 9th grade. There is no decent public transportation system. Most residents are not educated on healthy eating and are also living below the poverty line so their little amount of money is spent on buying cheap fast food. It's a very sad situation and if it wasn't for this situation I wouldn't be considering moving to Chicago at the end of the summer.

I ride my bike a lot and I promote riding to all my friends. I am not overweight and I do not eat fast food.

That's a long way away, it does seem strange. Next time yell "No yelling at cyclists on the corner"

I thought about a stencil on the sidewalk in that spot that says
"No Bicycles Allowed?"

Oh, Oh and the best part is that the fort worth bike trail runs behind the building along the trinity river. The trail is actually closer to the building than I was. I just happened to be in the front as opposed to the back. Oh well, this is just dumb. I thought everyone would get a laugh out of it.

So I sent radioshack an email about this the night it happened. I explained everything in detail. They responded the next day saying they would forwarded my message to the security department. So today I got an email from the head of security at radio shack asking me to call him concerning the situation. So I did of course. And guess what, no bicycles allowed is not the company policy. Shocking isn't it. He apologized several times and told me about how there are bike racks all over the new building. When we hung up he probably went on about his day as if I never existed but hey, I feel better. He said the security gaurd would be dealt with. He didn't offer me a new GanWell or Vanilla bike for my trouble unfortunately. *****es.
