Triathlon - Just bought some cheap speed...

Picked up an older disc and a one-two year old spinergy Tilium SS(45mm deep rim) front, combined for under 250 shipped... I'm hoping it'll give me about 4-5 minutes in my Half IM(sub 4:20 just got a little more realistic) at the end of the summer over my current 32 spoke mavic open pros. I'll post pics with the new wheels once I've gotten them and they're all set up. I'm pretty excited that I managed to get two fairly good wheels for less than one weeks pay, don't want to upset the misses.

If your looking at 4:20 for a 1/2, I think you already have the speed. But, new stuff is always cool. :)

WOW! 4:20 would place you right with guys like Matt Lieto (a pro triathlete) who I believe finished 12th at 1/2 Ironman Florida. Even at 4:25 you are right at the same level of most of the pro athletes out there. My queston is - if you are that fast without ever riding deep dish wheels before why the crappy Tilium SS? With anything under 4:30 you should be riding free top of the line stuff - ever think about getting a sponsor?

Well, I'm just breaking into the Tri world. But hopefully, I will have a sponsor after a few races and I can upgrade.

Best combination hands down(IMO) Rear disk(i have a Renn, but Hed, and Zipp are good too) and a tri spoke on the front.


OH!!!!! i just figured it out.....you mean 4:20 for the WHOLE thing, i was like wtf, thats a really slow half I/M bike split

A tri spoke is probably close to as fast as a 80mm rim but it looks cooler so it is what all of HEDs sponsored riders use. If you check out hedcycling.com you can see how close a 40mm deep rim to a 90mm deep rim or tri spoke and everything inbetween. Really if you're not on a 25mm or under rim you are getting an advantage but the advantage seems to be a diminishing return after 40mm. Ooh and a nice part about spoked wheels is the ability to true them, not that a tri spoke will ever need much truing.
I wich I had the extra $250 for the Renn disc(although the one I picked up is a similar nomax construction to the old Renn 575 and weighs in with QR ), but like I say I'm bound to get it sooner or later.

Just added to the Tri Arsenal, a $110 brand new QR UltraJohn. The guy had a highly discounted version of the Ultrajohn with sleeves and recommended I save the money and buy the Ultra. Thats why I love that bike store, so few places talk you to lower priced items. But the suit fits great, I just hope the water isn't too warm in Iowa on August 20th.
