WE have just purchased
an older Santana with a suzue 140mm rear hub. I would like to upgrade to a 9 speed cassette hub. Can I use a 135mm shimano XT 36 spoke hub with a 2mm spacer on each side? We are new to tandems and weigh about 350#. Has anyone tried this?

I don't see why not. We abuse a Sun Rhyno Lite 36h laced to an XT disc hub on our MTB tandem.

I'm pretty sure you will be fine..

buti do have TWO Suggestions..

A)find a 140MM axle so you have full supoort at the drop outs(no QR failure,,frame bending, etc)

B) Install ALL The Spacer at the NONE drive side, that way you can achive a more even dish at the spokes making the wheel stronger.

I will say go for it,,,
XT hubs (specially the new ones) are not that strong (for hardcore MTB) but I'm sure they will work on a road type aplication with out a failure of the cassete or the interface with the hub..

spacing out by2 mm each side may work but I doubt it. Get a 140 mm axle and get the wheel redished to suit the new axle. Putting spacers in each side will keep the rim central, but the sprockets will be in the wrong place. The XT hub is a good one and should take your weight, but there are more suitable Tandem hubs out there. I have used an XT hub on the front with no problem But I would keep a very close eye on it if used on the rear. 36 spokes are ok on a 26" wheel, but others will inform you about 700 wheels. Remember though that a Tandem doe put a lot more strain on the wheels, so get them checked before using them

You could always have the rear spread to 145 and just get a newer 9 speed wheel off ebay...
