i think they were just unstickyed so they would dissapear into the archives.

I think there is something more to it than merely unstickyed, but your archive idea might be part of the answer.
Initially searches from the beginning and from last year were unsuccessful in descending order, but once I switched the option to ascending, it brought everything available and jogged it into visible with last or beginning searches in either order.
Can someone explain the archival process?
