Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Thread Conversation Development

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am curious to know, as the recipient of a couple of less than flattering replies to posts I have made in the past, where the rules and the mods stand on the idea of threads developing into a conversation where the topic of chat changes greatly from the original title of the thread. I see so often curt replies from lots of people who, very often, have been members for a very short time, who seem to want nothing more than have a crack at someone about changing the topic and while there are threads where people deliberately change the topic, when a thread has developed into a conversation and noone seems to mind, is it a bad thing? I guess it is just narrow minded people who have nothing constructive to add, and just want to have something to say... Rant over...

This is the nature of internet forums.
Threads will get derailed.
Threads will get hijacked.
The only way you can stop this is by locking every thread that goes OT which means this turns into a very stupid forum. If someone is truly being an ass or is deliberately derailing every thread they come across, report it to the mods.
