is there a big difference between 700X23 and 700X20 tires? i have always riden 700x23's and always see the 20's on sale or clearanced out. do they take the same tubes?

The difference in 3mm of width.

Having said that, every tire company's version of tire width is slightly different; a 20mm Vittoria looks a whole lot like a 23mm Michelin. Strictly, however, 20mm tires are usually noticeably narrower than 23mm and produce a slightly harsher ride with slightly less rolling resistance.
