Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Cartridge brake pads dangerous for fixie?

Hello I have never used cartridge brake pads, nor have I seen them up close with my eyes... but I was wondering, if they simply slide into place, will they slide right off if you activate your brake while riding backwards?

there is usually a screw to hold them in place.

yeah, i wouldn't sweat it. the little screw on the pad will hold it in.

I can do backwards circles all day... but the moment I try to go anywhere besides in a circle I just end up on my face with one of my footsies still locked in (thx Time atac)

I don't reckon I would ever be in a position riding backwards fast enough that I would need brakes to slow me down...

Can't you just slow down pedaling, or are you worried your tail will catch your head.

I think this is one of the funniest threads... You are riding in circles backwards (at presumably high speed) and your worry is that your brake may fail.

Heres an idea: Turn your brake pads around so that they pop out when you brake while pedalling forward, but work just dandy when you're going in backwards circles

or have front and rear arranged symetrically, front for stopping forward and rear for stopping backward.

if you were going backwards and skidded, would that not be like skidding your front wheel? when you skid your front wheel you go down, fast. Some of you rocket scientists should be able to figure it out.

here's what lennard zinn has to say about the importance of installing cartridge pads correctly:

"When you re-install the pad to the brake arm, make sure that the closed end of the pad faces forward. Otherwise, the first time you brake hard, you may see two pieces of rubber fly ahead of you and feel two more hit the backs of your legs. You may not remember anything after that."

Of course, for backwards riding, adjust the statement accordingly.

I don't think so, because of the difference in weight distrobution... Maybe a little wheelie...

When I built up a bike with brand new brake calipers with shoes just like the ones in the photo they came with the instructions from Shimano. They had a big warning about not running the shoes backwards as the pads may come out, they have the screws just like the ones posted. The screw goes into a notch in the rubber pad, maybe the pad rips apart? Maybe Shimano's lawyers get paid by the hour?

sorry it's not that important. and i don't think i've used my brakes whilst riding backwards, more than a couple times... i was just curious though as i do not have a front brake at the moment but was going to buy a campy chorus that came with cartridge pads already installed... was just curious :)
