A chemist by vocation and a cyclist and fly fisherman/fly tier by avocation I guess would sum things up fairly well. I've been two- wheeling since the age of four and couldn't imagine life without a bike. I have had a great time teaching my daughter (5) and son (3) (who just got his training wheels off this last weekend) to ride. Most of my riding is commuting anymore but I rarely take the most direct route to work just to increase the time in the saddle.

The consulting company I work for was heavily involved in the writing of documents for and the marketing of the EPA / DOT joint program called the Commuter Choice Leadership Initiative (www.commuterchoice.gov). Although there presently is no tax incentive for cyclists, there is movement afoot to get some (goto www.bikefed.org I believe for more info). In starting a velo program here at the lab, I have learned a lot about commute alternatives, cycling programs, advocacy groups, etc., etc., etc. and it is all very interesting stuff that we should all look into at some point in time, in my opinion.

Anyway, I reside with my family (spouse, 3 seedlings, 2 cats and a resident racoon) in Shelton, Washington, which is a short jaunt from Olympia. If you're not afraid of a little water, the riding season is quite long and the fishing is pretty good. My main problem is probably similar to many involved with the Forum...too much desire to ride and never enough time. I presently ride a Trek 7900 hybrid converted to a tourer by changing to drop bars, barcons, aero levers, fenders and racks (F&R). I dream of the day my wife lets me order a new Americano from Co-Motion (www.co-motion.com) or that new Trek 520 or a Bruce Gordon, or a......

I digress.

"See" you on the bandwidth!

So how many people ask you if you are possibly the Don Johnson from Miami Vice?
I agree with the lack of time. I ride (when I get the chance) a Trek 950 that I bought with graduation money from NC State. My parents nearly flipped when I spent so much on a bike instead of putting it toward a new car, etc. I've always stashed $$$$ for rainy days and couldn't resist the urge to splurge. I walked into a bike store with my boyfriend (now husband) and saw this bike that was great. The guy told me the price and I told him that was too much for a kid right out of school, but thanks. Then, he offered to knocked $100 off while my husband was in another part of the store. He (my husband) walked up right as I said, "I'll take it!" The bike is now 5 yrs old and still doing great.
BTW, nice to meet you. I just logged on today.

If I had a dollar for every time I got ribbed about the name (and I really wish I did) I would probably have enough for a new Trek 5200 for every day of the month.

3 years old with no training wheels. That's impressive!

I'm just grateful that A) he always wears his helmet and B) we have really good insurance coverage.

I've always thought the road riding around Shelton looked a little scary. I bet you've had some near misses? With cars, that is ....

I haven't put a lot of miles in around Shelton except on Mason Lake Rd and around our subdivision (Lake Limerick). Most of my riding occurs in Port Orchard going back and forth to work on Bay Street and Beach Drive (I have the bike in the back of the truck, drive in to Suldan's Boat Works out near Gorst and pedal from there to the lab, which is almost 10 miles)

Do you ride around the Shelton area frequently?

I don't, I've only visited. I love that part of Washington.
