"Spray-on mud for SUVs"

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Sprayon_dirt_sold_to_make_SUVs_look__0630.html

For owners who don't want it to look like they're driving an unnecessary gas-guzzler, a little splash signals that the vehicle spends time tackling the back country.

Can I use it on my mountain bike?

And they say there's no good case for euthanasia.

I hope it comes with a Certificate of Lameness suitable for framing. Because it would be shame to let such an extraordinary achievement go unnoticed.

Erf! I should have thought of this and saved all the mud and dirt from when I actually did go offroading to put into a spray-bottle instead of washing it off. I could be making some serious cash! I wonder if I can resell my old bashed up gastank and transfer case skid plates. Or maybe my old banged up exhaust system? Hmm... how about stick-on trail pin-striping?

I might buy a can, perfect for shiny BMWs that pass too close. :)

Just do what I do. Catch up to them at the next stoplight when you're riding your MTB and ride slightly ahead of them while shedding the mud and off your tyres.

The real use of this, although it can't be advertised as such, is concealing your license plate.

Possibly. I have gotten pulled over for having a muddy license plate before. I had been wheeling over the weekend and the whole Jeep was covered in mud and dirt which I hadn't had a chance to wash off. I guess the cops were bored that particular day. I was driving to pick up my wife from work when one of them pulled me over and told me to wash off my license plate.

True, they can't mail a ticket if the camera can't read the plate #.

I squeezed my Landcruiser through some narrow Jeep trails a few years back. No need for spray-on rocker panel dents. You know you've had real fun in the mud when your wheels get all wobbly and out of balance because the inside of the rims are packed with mud. You can't buy that in a spray bottle.

I might get a can for the Porsche Cayennes that our super-lame consultant surgeons are parading this season. The thought of actual mud on their darlings? Oh, mercy!

Yeah. When I got my first Jeep so many years ago, I took it out for its first trail run and on the drive home the whole vehicle was shaking at highway speeds. I took it back to the dealership the next day and they told me the wheels were out of balance because there was so much mud caked in them. The thing only spent a week fresh from the dealer lot free of trail scratches and dings in the skid plates before I went rock-crawling with it. :D

I also once had a weird clicking sound that occurred everytime I turned the steering wheel. I spent a whole week trying to track it down. I finally gave up and took it to the dealer. The mechanic came and visited me while I was in the waiting area and said, "you trail your ZJ right?" (it was more a statement than a question actually) to which I replied, "yeah." He then told me to recheck the torque on the anti-swaybar links after every run because mine were a bit loose. I normally disconnect my anti-swaybars to get a bit more front end articulation and I guess I forgot to tighten them enough when I reconnected them. I felt so foolish.

why can't they just drive in the ditch when it rains?

Because that would require thought. Not to mention there are a lot of car eating ditches here in the Houston area.

I remember seeing a can for mountain bikes during the late 1980's mountain bike explosion.

The guys I used to off road with had some big pins that held them in place. They'd just pop the pins out and swing the bar around (I didn't pay too much attention, they were only Jeeps :D) somehow so they were out of the way. I've got photos somewhere. I didn't need the extra articulation, as my wagon was not a rock crawler by any means. It was a rather guilty pleasure to watch them get beat up with their SWB vehicles, while my LWB Cruiser just plowed over everything. I miss her.

Next they'll be making specially formulated spray-on sweat for poseur roadies in varieties of Lance (the obsessed drench), Jan (sort of a honeyglaze), and Tyler (that's not my sweat!).

Thats the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Spray on mud? You are spending money on something completly free. Spend the time, put it in 4 wheel drive and go four wheeling. You dont have to go completly crazy to get mud on your truck. Just drive through a muddy puddle fast.

Yep. I've seen them too. I've seen some really cool swaybar disconnect systems. However, I guess I was being kind of cheap and figured spending a little time with T14 wrench was good enough.

My Jeep is a ZJ (Grand Cherokee for the unitiated) so it's a LWB. I admit in certain rock-crawling situations it works better than the SWB but some trails can be pretty tight and there's not that much room to be swinging a big wheelbase when you need to hit some of those wheel placements. I've seen under 80" SWB rigs simply turn almost perpendicular to the trail that had sheer cliff walls on both sides in order to get their wheels placed. Most of the time I probably could have handled the terrain without having to disconnect the swaybars but it would have been a pain to come up on something that required more articulation and not had the bars disconnected. Then again, as you have mentioned, that's when things like a JKS quick-disconnect would have come in handy. :D

Apparently, I would lift a wheel on the steeper off-camber turns. That's with long travel suspension. But I found it easy to get through most places the Jeeps could go, with a few exceptions: I lost a side mirror, door edge trim, antenna, and drip rail trim. The worst was when I came down on the rear bumper and bent my exhaust. Seeing as how they took 6 weeks and $1600 to come up with a ceramic header and exhaust, I was not pleased that they overlooked the point of exit. If I build another, I'll probably have the exhaust exit through a cutout in a custom bumper.

As I'm sure you're aware, LWB is the way to go if you have to drive the vehicle on a regular basis too. I started building an FJ40, but couldn't stomach the prospect of another money pit. Oh well.

Thread hijack complete.

* Obligatory bike content. I did use this Landcruiser for hauling mountain bikes too.

Hmm....could be fun to spray down an H2 from floorpan to rooftop in that stuff...

....given iwon't be my H2, I refuse to own such an ugly and useles vehicle...it's not even a decent off-roader...
