Mountain Biking - "broke" my rear derailer

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. ok so i got the old school shimano xt rear derailer tonight but i couldnt figure out how it fit onto the bike so i accidentally took it apart and the spring thing popped out.. there is too much tension and i can't wind the spring and then push the thing in place. i dont know if anyone knows what i am talking about, but basically i cant get a spring back in place. is there a special tool for it? if i take it to the LBS would they know what to do? and even if i get the spring back in, i still dont see how it could mount onto the frame. any help? thanks
YES yes take the der. and the bike to your LBS. They should be able t ohandle it.
never mind its all bent and **** i bought a beat/busted derailer from a guy who didnt know ****.
took me a couple hours to get the spring back in place though. wasnt that hard just needed the right tools. after 5 hours or so of messing with it i came up with using different method to pull against the tension and used a deepsocket to push it down. im not too bright but finally got it in, only to find out that the cage was a little bent but the pivot was REALLY bent. hammered and plied it back to place somewhat, wondering if it's still usable. sigh
