BMX - Flying (on airplane) with your BMX

I'm planning on taking two long trips and want to bring my BMX with me. I've seen the bags on danscomp for flying i just can't seem to find any others?

anyone know where I can get a good, inexpensive if possible, but i'd rather spend more and protect my bike! bike bag. Something to put my bike in to travel with it on an airplane to south america and europe.

First off, it's going to cost you around $100 to get your bike on a plane, even in a bag, 99.99999999[...]% of the time.

Last time I flew with my bike it didn't cost any extra 'cause I managed to get the frame in one piece of checked luggage and everything else in the other. Neither exceeded weight or dimensional limitations. The site Beerman posted has some clever tricks on it, I didn't do it that way so there's obviously more than one way to sneak one on.

Most bike bags exceed the limitation for standard sized luggage and you'll get dinged for it. If you're good with a wrench and also a Tetris master it can be done within the limits. If you have questions, call up the airline.

just buy a seat for it!!!!!! :)

whats the average, i would rather drop like 50 dollars extra either way and have my bike safely stowed away rather than nott elling them and risk having it get screwed.

Another Good Idea(r) would be to go to your LBS and ask for the foam and plastic bitties new bikes are packaged in (they'll probably give 'em up for free). If they're a decent shop they might even have tips and tricks for packaging it so it doesn't get damaged and you don't get dinged.

On an international flight, it was US$96 for one extra piece of luggage. If you take your bike apart, there's no reason it wouldn't fit into your 2 allowable pieces of luggage. The tandem below can be broken down into 2 large suitcases, but that's because of the S&S couplers. If we can do it, you can do it.

Yeah, there's 6 S&S couplers on the 3 tubes bewteen the seats. You can see the bulges in the tubing. The couplers alone cost more than most of you guys spend on a complete bike, but the bike was designed for travel. The frame weighs less than 3.7kg.

By the way, SUNLITE Cycling Gear makes a Bike in a Bag soft case. It's 34x45x11 and would hold your bike plus plenty of clothing. I like to pack light and buy stuff overseas, although I don't know if that will work for you.

i'll check the sunlight bag, money really sint' much an issue, i was planning on packing the clothes i bring around my bike for some padding, and sense i always seem to get a little spend happy i figured i'd be buying a lot of stuff over seas and as usual mailing it back prior to me going home.

A buddy of mine picked up a sick a$$ keyboard case in Europe that is heavily padded which he sent to me. The bike fits in it perfectly (remove wheels/bars) and in about 6 trips with it I haven't been questioned once.

ALWAYS check an airline's policy before you travel. I've been dinged at airports where they do not print their 'bicycle' policy. Even with a box within the limitations of what they call luggage AND their only consumer available policy, they would not let me on the plane without charging me more for my bike. Basically, holding me hostage. So, I charged it, then denied the charge when it came in a month later. No repurcussions from that at all.

The surcharge is there for oversize bags, but it really irks me when they are clearly just after extra cash. Even when I have paid extra, my bike box slides down the luggage rack with everyone elses suitcases and the box is sometimes ripped and torn. WTF!?!?! Do NOT plan on them treating your bike any different than anything else, even if you pay extra for it.

That was the whole idea of building ours. Not only is it great for travel, but people always stop and ask us about all the cool bits that aren't easy to get in Australia.

When I took my family to the US last year, we picked up a bunch of stuff for the tandem. Total pieces of luggage for the family? 22.

yeah, i kinda figured that, but atleast openly stating it's a bike would let me pack it super good, but then again i know who we're dealing with, i once had a snowboard fall off the baggage cart on the way to the plain i am guessing and get run over by somethign else because when i got my snowboard back the case had a very clear tire track over it as well as the bindings having been literally completely crushed and flattened, luckily it took no work at all fo rthem to send me way more money than needed to carry everything, got a new board, bindings, jacket and pants outa the deal.
