Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bad News for Bikes

Ok all, I know this isn't really the place to be doing this but I thought you all might want to know. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor just retired. O'Connor was the first woman justice but more importantly to us the most important swing vote on just about every issue. As bikers this could have some bad effects for us. In other words, less restrictions on the auto industry (=more gigantic monstrosities on the road), harder to file injury lawsuits, terror and F*$!ing chaos descending upon humanity, you know how it is these days. The conservatives run the other two branches of govt and the court is the last thing standing between us and the invading nazi hordes.

If you wanna do something quick and easy to help just go to pfaw.org and follow the links to petitions and most importantly call you senators (not congresspeople). We gotta make sure we don't get another Scalia or Thomas.

Yeah this week was full of really big victories but now it's scary. To downtube: yes conservatives are taking over the government and also yes if you want to get technical the nazis were a conservative movement. All I know is that if we get another scalia/thomas we're hosed for every reason imaginable.

For domain cases I'm pretty sure they can't strip your house down for a mall. I think it has to be govt. property no?

I think that qualifies as an oxymoron.
The word NAZI stands for "National Socialist German Workers Party," and, politically, this party has only International Communism to its left.
People tend to use the word Nazi as an epithet and apply it to whomever they don't like.
In Europe many people describe modern Nazis as on the right, but that only tells the observer how far to the left the European political scene has drifted.
If anyone wants to discuss this further, I invite them to visit my forum, The Political Arena (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=685), where we regularly talk about Nazis, Democrats, Republicans and the like (no bike discussions there, yet).

NO WAY! I for one can't wait until the US becomes a police state, then we can become awesome mad-maxian post-apocalyptic underground resistance bike rebels. yes.

I don't think it will swing too far to the right. Example- if abortion is overturned, none of the conservative right-wingnut christian (small "c") base will show up to vote on election day.

Then again, I was surprised at the recent anti-porn laws that quietly (recently) took effect- we are truly reliving the 80s.

So if one person leaving the judicial branch can create that much chaos, then one person -- namely yourself -- can reverse it. What's your plan?

There's usually a discrepancy between a common cyclist's (no offense) influence on federal constitutional issues and that of a Supreme Court judge's.

But I like your gung-ho attitude.

re: emminent domain

the old rulling stated that in order for private land to be taken it had to be for public works, which was interpreted to mean that it could only be taken for government projects, IE highways, dams, or other such infrastructural projects

the new ruling as i understand rephrases it as "public benefit" which means that private land can be taken under iminent domain and sold to private developers who plan projects that have "public access"

this is a huge deal especially here in NYC as many brooklyn residents (possibly some on this forum?) are at risk of their property being seized under imminent domain laws to be sold to Ratmer's development company to make a new stadium for the NJ Nets...this new ruling will help him since a stadium is accessible to the public

additionally the law speaks of just compensation for any seized property, but it is important to realize that "just compensation" is not the same as "fair market value" and often considers only the current (non market) value of the property and the revenue it is currently generating, if any, for the owner, and not what the future "developed" properrty value will be...this boils down to the little people getting screwed in favor of "development"

anyway...enough ranting...sorry...back to bikes
