Ullrich in accident on training run but will be fit for Tour
July 1, 2005
CHALLANS, France (AP) -- Jan Ullrich's bid to upstage six-time champion Lance Armstrong at the Tour de France got off to a bad start Friday when he crashed into a team car during training.
The 1997 Tour winner was training with his T-Mobile team when he failed to spot a warning to brake and slammed into the car's back window.
He sustained minor cuts and scratches to his neck, but will be OK to start Saturday's 11.8-mile time trial from Fromentine to Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile.
``He did not see the special sign we make when the car has to brake,'' T-Mobile press officer Luuc Eisenga said by telephone. ``The window is smashed. But it's nothing serious. He'll be OK to start the race.''
Ullrich has finished runner-up five times at the Tour -- three times to Armstrong.

Any worse than Davis Phinney's back in the 7-Eleven days? He shattered the whole rear window of a support vehicle and I don't recall seeing him with a helmet.... wonder if Jan was wearing a lid at the time....

I think there is a translation problem with the term "special sign."

I figure in 5 years when being interviewed on interplanetary TV before the Tour de Europe
he will claim there was a conspiracy to keep him from winning, and he could have won
if everyone else wasn't doping.
Hey Greg, Jan's on the phone for ya. . .
Ullrich has superficial cuts, bruises
Reuters
CHALLANS, France -- Germany's Jan Ullrich, the 1997 Tour de France winner, was injured in a freak training accident on the eve of the Tour's start but escaped mostly unhurt on Friday.
"He did not see the special sign we make when the car has to brake," T-Mobile press officer Luuc Eisenga said by telephone. "The window is smashed. But it's nothing serious. He'll be OK to start the race."
Ullrich hit the rear windscreen, which smashed into pieces, and suffered cuts near the throat.
The spokesman said the German, a five-time Tour runner-up, was treated by the team doctor, who said the bruises and cuts were only superficial.
The Tour starts Saturday with a 19-km time trial between Fromentine and Noirmoutier on Saturday.
---Don't worry, he'll still be there.

Naturally, he was refining his descending skills.
That's rough. Broke the window! Sounds like it could be a bad omen for him. Or it could be good: Ullrich comes back from a accident the DAY BEFORE to win the Tour de France! I'll tell you how it ends in a few weeks ;)

Maybe he's just coming on form and underestimated his speed.

Didn't Davis Phinney go through a rear windshield as well several years ago?

I've never known Jan to be one to make excuses for not winning. Other people do - but basically every year he says that Armstrong is powerful and he simply wasn't prepared.

Yes, he did at Liege-Bastogne-Liege some time in the late '80's if I remember correctly. It was while he was still riding for 7-Eleven. There's a famous photo of the crash, probably by Graham Watson. Ironically, one of the co-sponsor's logos on the team car was for a company called Isoglass.
I'm just glad he'll be able to race.

I remember seeing pictures of that crash. He was cut pretty good..
Gosh, I thought this was terrible. I agree T-Mobile is downplaying his injuries.
I have never since Jan looking so fit and ready. How sick and tired he must be
of being number two.

THIS IS ALL A BIG SHAM, It's like the time when Lance pretended to be hurting and then dropped the hammer on Jan. Just this time it's in reverse, and Jan is hoping that Lance and the Disco Boys will take it easy in the TT if Jan is all beat up.

no it was on a training ride. No T-Mobile reality show coming any time soon, so I don't think the cameras were on.
