I have a manitou fork sxr and seems to be low on oil, no damping. Just wondering if it is ok to use an automotive oil or is there specific shock oil that must be used? I think it requires 5 weight.? Thanks.

Go to a motorcycle shop and look at motorcycle suspension oil. Motor oil will work in a pinch, but it is not at all designed for the task. It will foam and lose its effectiveness in short order.
The oil you get at the moto shop is superior in durability and stiction resistance than conventional bike-type oil. Oddly it is also considerably cheaper.
Lastly, if in doubt, find an LBS that you can trust. You should always have a local expert you can consult. There is also a possibility that you will need further work on your damping, so have someone give you a second opinion before going too far unless you feel confident.

thanks for the information. Probably should have the fork taken apart, cleaned and re-oiled. Not sure how much this would cost hopefully still cheaper than a new good quality fork.

your basically asking for a fork rebuild. Fork work is crappy, often times it seems you've got to send it away

I run Bel-Ray Fork oil that I got from a local moto shop. Rebuilds arent difficult if you are a bit mechanically inclined. Problem is, fork manufacturers rarely release service manuals. There are some floating around on the internet but are hard to find.

Well if you have a rockshox fork you might be in luck. I have overhauled my SID, but rockshox also released an excellent technical service manual.
And i second the enduro fork seals, those things are as good as seals get. Even after a snowy winter and muddy spring, i did my overhaul to find the inside still clean.

I went to the manufactures' web site for manitou shocks and they do have some manuals to download but I could not find one that is for my fork since it is a 2001. It is on my Trek fuel 90 (2001 came on the bike) that also has worn frame pivot bushings. My other bike fuel 80 (2001 but has not been ridden that much) has a RockShock Judy (not an expensive shock and kind of heavy) but works good. Does seem like with good instructions the Manitou would not be too difficult to do.
