I'll be in the south of France in a few weeks... I definately want to climb Ventoux. Can anybody help me with a place to rent a decent bike new there? Any logistical advice at all?

Well ...

The shop in Malaucene is gone, so that's out.

You can try Mag2Roues in Vaison la Romaine for a rental. Not sure what they may have, but they do a brisk rental business, and handle Trek, among other marques.

Almost any bike shop here rents bikes, so check around.

There are three routes for road bikes: from Sault (easiest), Malaucene, and Bedoin (hardest). The first and last meet at Chalet Reynard, and the last 6+ Km from there are fairly tough, with a few 9.5% sections. I have done the Sault route (before I was ready), but made it. I will probably try Malaucene this season.

My brother-in-law was here last summer, and wanted to see the Tour de France route from Bedoin. I figured "what the hell", and took my bike along to try though I had spent the prior ten days with some kind of chest problem. I made 9.5 Km before I couldn't breathe any more and quit. Just as well, as the winds were around 100 KPH after Chalet Reynard, and the rest was in cloud/fog. Very dangerous. It is often that way - hence the name - so check carefully before you start out.
