MY NEW TANDEM (pics)

I have finnished the tandem. First thanks for everyones help.

I acutally finnished it last sunday (sent to the shop for final cable adjustments). We have put 75 total on it and she loves it she has never done any kind of major cycling. Last monday we put 25 on it and again on tuesday and today we also did 25 with a 14mph avg or so.

Cool! I really like the mount you made. It is a clever solution to transporting your tandem. One suggestion, though. Get some sort of reflector and light on the rear end of the mount extension as it would be very difficult for other drivers to see in less than ideal conditions.

Congratulations on a really nice ride and a really nice way to get it from point A to Point B.

I need to paint it and come up with some sort of reflector I had orignaly planed to attach straps from the bars to the eyelet. after riding around with it I dont think it is needed but I might any way just to draw attention to the the bar. .. or I could paint it deglo orange or pink.

It's none of my business and you didn't ask but, if it was me I'd probably remove everything from the upright back and relocate the bracing angle to face forward, running down towards the hitch (see doctored photo, below).

My rationale is, even if you paint everything sticking out the back day-glo orange and plaster it with reflective tape someone will invariably either run into it with their car, doing damage to their car and possibly to the tandem and anything around it in the jeep OR a pedestrian will trip-over it walking behind your jeep. Why invite trouble IF the additional bracing and tie-down isn't necessary?

I agree I want to flip it around ... after wacking my shin on it a few times. with the short wheelbase of the jeep I normaly press it all the way into a parking spot or back in. if the tandem is not attached.

99% of the time its only on the rack to and from a ride (but i agree and looking into the change)


can you tell the size of the frame just by looking at it?


It actualy is a bit large for me. Im 5'11 with a 31 to 32 inch inseam (dress pants) .. I could stand it to be a few cm shorter I have a 4 inch stem and want a 3 inch with a rise to make me more comfortable.

Jennifer is at the bottom of adjustment and Im thinking about crank shortners for her.170cm cranks yesterday I moved her seat back 1.5 inches and down about 1/2 inch .. to get the seat any lower you have to side the assy back on the beam.

As for the softride I call out the bumps and she says she didnt feel it. (patches in the road no more that a inch either way)

Oh yeah... The height of the head tube usually offers your first clue.

On small frames the top - internal - down tube all merge together on the head tube with no daylight between the joints. In some cases, the internal and down tubes will be mitered and merge together at the head tube.

On medium frames, you get a little daylight between the tubes at the head tube.

On large frames, you'll see even more space between the top - internal - down tube junctions.

On extra large frames -- which yours almost looks to be -- there will be a ton of head tube showing between the other 3 tube junctions.

Or just run a measuring tape from the center of bottom bracket to top of seat tube collar. My medium Rumba softride measures 22".

I just took a look at mine and yours has about an inch more space between the top tube and the down tube.

It looks like it may be a 23 x 21 frame.
However, measure from top of your seattube/toptube juncture to center of bottom bracket to give your size.
With a Softride, it's more difficult to do . . .

Wow, that is one very nice looking tandem! I looked for a good used tandem that would fit me and my stoker, but we are short ... 5' 6" and 5' 3" respectively. So, I just ordered a new 2005 Cannondale from my LBS.

I like your transport setup! Pretty innovative! I'm going to try and come up with something for my Nissan SUV as I don't want to spend $300 to $550 on pre-Mfr'd items. I have a Yakima Roof Rack currently.
