I was to make the surly cross check my all rounder
with a campag veloce triple, until i found a great deal
on a used rivendell rambouillet (so i'm going to switch
over the triple and derailleurs to the rambouillet as it
really is intended to be a sport tourer/randonneur bike)

I do realize the cross check has semi horizontals so it's ok
for either a fixie or ss (i'm not sure which way to go yet...perhaps
both!)...but realize that there is the steamroller and 1x1 bikes
that surly also makes.

your imput is appreciated, as i'm trying for a fast but strong
ss or fixie.

cheers
joe

Yep, I have a Crosscheck set up a fixie. Been using it as my main form of transport and training for more than a year - fantastic bike. I run a big saddlebag sitting on a Nitto rack, cantis, Phils etc and the Surly is great to ride loaded up with gear. The semi-vertical drop outs haven't been an issue for me as I keep the same ring/cog combo all the time (48X18)

Wow, is that yours? Nice. I like the country road cruiser style setup. Makes for a great all-day, go anywhere bike.

My Crosscheck has been setup fixed from day one. It's my road bike but is built for the abuse of pot-holes, dirt and anything else I find the need to ride over or through. It also serves as my touring machine for long weekend camp outs. Here's a few pix:
