Recreational & Family - do kids get bored riding tagalongs?

We're contemplating a tagalong for our 5 yo and I'm just wondering if kids really like these or find them boring. You can't really steer, but you've got to hold on and balance; do they get bored? Do your kids like them?

I had one for a while to take my son along on rides he had alot of fun. Normaly rides would last a few hours.. half way we would stop get ice cream or something along those lines. Main problem I ran into he grew way to fast. So did not get to do it for very long really..

we have had ours for a few months and I can't get my 5 yr old off of it. need to encourage him onto his own bike.

At the beginning, my oldest daughter used the Addams Trail-a-Bike. After a mere one year... and 1800 km, the universal joint had developped too much play for enjoyable riding. I then bought a Burley Piccolo, which she used 3 years and which is now used by her younger sister.

Getting tired? After 80-100 km! Getting bored? It depends on the scenery. I live in a large city and I noticed that we can ride 40-50 km in the city or even in suburban environments without any problems. It's the 30-40 km without houses, intersections, red lights and services that seem harder to ride through. Or long climbs.

As always, ice cream, playgrounds, etc. help.

Depends on the kid and the parent. My son never shut up, so I can never say he was bored. Also, the kid DOESN'T balance at all, the parent/captian does all of that, but the traliercycle teaches balance.

Adams folding trail a bike for us. not enough miles yet to judge on duraBILITY. would not consider subjecting my son to 50k rides.. seems a bit rediculous to subject a 5 year old to that imo.....

We have a trek Mt train and are very happy with it. My 6 YO will actually fall asleep on it. She loves to laugh and sing as we ride along. I put a handle bar bag & water bottle on it so she can snack and drink as we ride. Our prefered routes go by numerous play grounds so we often stop and do the swings, monkey bars etc. The stop for ice cream half way is a good one we do also. I also added a computer so she can tell me how fast, far etc.

I put a cheap bike computer on each of our two trailer bikes so the kids can watch our speed and distance. We've probably gone faster than we should have because of that though! :D

My four-year-old just started riding a Trek Mt. Train. We borrowed it from a friend, and he just loves it! He's learning to shift, and how to ride predictably around cars. I can't say how long he will be on it, but we rode 10 miles yesterday, and 6 today.

Wind that sucker up to about 45mph and the kid won't be bored he'll be hanging on for dear life!!! :D my son and I tried out a friends tandem this past winter and hit 45 in the road, we were haulin'.
