I was slowly mashing my way up the mountain past a Sheriff's station when out of an alley, a Sheriff pulls out in his car and almost broadsides me! I saw a total of zero cyclists and zero pedestrians on that road so everyone just assumes no one is crazy enough to try to climb it. I was polite about it, though, and so was the Sheriff. I could see he was a bit embarrassed for almost hitting another person that he's supposed to protect and to serve.
Moral of the story - be careful about alleys. Even the cops can run you over.

Especially the cops. They spend a lot more time driving than other people, and they always have the best crash stories.
Glad you didn't get smashed.
Actually, here in Jacksonville FL a sheriff's deputy made a right turn into a fast food restaurant and hit a cyclist who was riding on the sidewalk. It is legal here to ride on the sidewalks and the deputy was at fault and they settled out of court to pay damages to the cyclist
Citizen's arrest! :D
Actually, in my city a police officer did hit a little girl running across the street. Very sad.
