BMX - Changing a Fork

Hello everyone,
I need some help changing a fork. I have never done it and I just wanted to see how hard it is. I ride street and I am getting a new fork with 1/4'' dropouts so it wil be stronger. I just wanted to get an idea of how to do it or how hard it will be to change it. I have not been on my bike in many years and I am ready to get back into riding again. I have not even messed with it yet, but I am now shopping for a new fork. I wanted to get a 14mm just so it will be a little stronger, but I really don't want to spend a lot of money yet so I thinkg the 3/8'' will be strong enough for now. Thanks for all the help guys.

It depends on weither or not your headset is a Threaded or Threadless. I think that Threadless headsets are a little bit more work than Threaded. It is absoulutly doable though. If your headset is a Threaded just loosen the big nut on top of your headset and pull the old fork on out. On the old fork there will be a washer looking race that you need to put on the new fork. When ever you pull the old fork out your bearing will come out to. No big deal just put them on the new fork and slide it back onto the headset. Threadless is basicaly the same thing put the stem is used to hold the fork to the frame instead of the big nut on top of the headset as i said earlyer. I'm not very good at explaining things but this should help some.

Thanks terminator. Right now I have a Kore fork and I am getting a new S&M Pitchfork. I think my headsets is a DK. Please forgive my ignorance I have not been into bikes since about 97-98. My bike is actually still at my parents house in storage and I am going to get it and do about $150.00 fix up on it. Thanks for all the help and I will check and see if mine is threadless or not.

Your welcome, the easiest way to tell if it is threaded or not is to look at the fork and see if a big nut is on top of the upper cup.

if unthreaded, take off stem and hit with rubber hammer till it falls out

Thanks for all of the awesome help. I think mine is threaded. It has a smaller nut on top and the front brake cable runs down through the nut, down through the frame to the front 990 brake. I also wanted to get some opinions on the S&M pitchfork with 990 mounts. I am wanting to use it for street so I want to make sure that it is strong and will last. Do any of you guys have any opinions about this fork? Thanks again for all the help.

Your fork shouldn't be threaded is theres a cable running through the nut ontop. It'd be a great help if you sent us a pic of the stem, and fork.

Thanks fireteamcharlie. I will take a pic of the stem tonight. I was wondering if that would be a problem with a new fork. I thought that if I got the pitchfork and it is threaded, but my stem is threadless. I don't think that would be a problem but it would if it was the other way around. Thanks again guys and I assure you that I am an intelligent guy, but I have just been out of the sport for many years and I am just now getting back into it. Here is another simple question. Will the new pitchfork have a hole through the center so I can run my front brake cable through it? Right now my fork is a Kore fork with straight dropouts and I just wanted to get a pitchfork. I won't be doing any more flatland and my bike is really set up for street, but I just put that Kore fork on there and I now want to trade it out for the pitchfork. Thanks again guys.

Threaded forks haven't been produced since the early 90's

Don't forget to pop the crown race off your old fork and put it on the new one or you're gonna munch your headset.
