In the Giro, several Fassa Bortolo riders went off the road together entering a corner. And it happened with a few FdJ and other riders yesterday in the TdF. Which makes me ask the experienced racers here the following question:
Since you can't possibly know every bit of the course in a stage race, do you rely on the guy in front of you to be on the mark around corners, to the extent that if he overcooks it, you simply follow him off?
I would think that this might be especially true when there is a big group, and visibility is not the best. And perhaps (as in the Giro example), when you are head down working extremely hard setting up for the sprint and may have compromised visibility.
I know (unfortunately) that this happens in aerobatics, which cost the lives of the USAF Thunderbirds team several years ago.
